About The Opportunity

The City of Penticton is looking for a full-time temporary (3 months) Network Systems Analyst, based in Penticton, B.C.

Reporting to the IT Supervisor, Security & Operations, the Network Systems Analyst role supports the stable operation of the in-house computer network. This includes planning, designing, installing, configuring, maintaining, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links while ensuring minimal network downtime. The person will also diagnose, resolve, and document hardware and software network problems in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end-user training and support where required.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

• Collaborate with users and the IT team to create optimal network design topologies and configurations.
• Work with end users and department heads to identify and document required network service levels. Work to meet service level agreements with end users.
• Aid in the development of business continuity and disaster recovery plans, and maintain current knowledge of plan executables. Respond to emergency network outages in accordance with business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
• Prepare and ensure accuracy of documentation, procedures manuals, and help sheets for the network, including data, voice, and video systems.

Acquisition & Development

• Support development and implementation of networking projects and new technology installations.
• Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards in support of network procurement and development efforts. Evaluate and recommend for purchase of networking hardware and software products.
• Write technical specifications for the purchase of networking hardware and software products.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of networking contracts and supervise contract-based installations.

Operational Management

• Ensure network and IP connectivity of all workstations, application servers, and back-end IT infrastructure.
• Install, configure & maintain all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, voice gateways, UPSs including all network-related virtual appliances.
• Utilize security solutions, including firewall, endpoint security and intrusion detection systems to protect the network infrastructure
• Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports.
• Receive and respond to incoming service desk tasks regarding network incidents and service requests.
• Perform on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex network problems for a variety of end users, and recommend and implement corrective hardware and software solutions.
• Recommend, schedule, and perform network improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
• Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory.

Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills

• Working technical knowledge of current wired & wireless hardware, network standards and protocols including authentication protocols.
• Ability to operate network component analyzers, scanners, and testers.
• Working technical knowledge of network, server and PC operating systems.
• Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience.
• Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to conduct research into networking issues and products as required.
• Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.
• Self-motivated and directed.
• Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
• Strong customer service orientation.

Required Education, Training & Experience

• College diploma, university degree or relevant certifications in the field of computer networking.
• 5+ years equivalent work experience with switched and routed networks.
• ITIL Foundation v3/v4 including a solid understanding of change management/change enablement.
• Extensive support experience with voice & collaboration applications.
• Valid BC Driver’s Licence - Class 5

Compensation based on skills and experience is an hourly rate of $45.78 - $50.85 (Pay Grade 15, 35 hours per week, CUPE), along with a host of excellent benefits including:
