LOCATION AND ABOUT NHH
Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH delivers a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Acute services include emergency and intensive care, medical/surgical care, obstetrical care and palliative care. Post-acute specialty services (PASS) include restorative care and rehabilitation. Mental health care, cancer and supportive care, dialysis and other ambulatory care clinics are offered on an outpatient basis through partnerships with regional centres and nearby specialists. NHH offers a full range of diagnostic services, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and mammography. The hospital serves the catchment area of west Northumberland County. A mixed urban and rural population of approximately 67,000 residents, west Northumberland comprises the Town of Cobourg, the Municipality of Port Hope, Alderville First Nation and the townships of Hamilton, Cramahe and Alnwick/Haldimand. Role Overview
The Disability Support Specialist is responsible for leading and coordinating the Hospital's disability management, employee wellness, occupational health and safety, and regulatory compliance programs. Acting as a subject matter expert, the role provides guidance and support to leaders and staff on disability management, workplace accommodations, return-to-work planning, wellness initiatives, and occupational health and safety requirements.
This position plays a critical role in promoting a safe, healthy, and supportive work environment by overseeing disability and wellness programs, supporting workplace safety initiatives, participating in Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) activities and monitoring compliance with legislative and organizational standards. The incumbent collaborates with employees, leaders, healthcare providers, benefits administrators, and external stakeholders to support employee wellbeing while minimizing organizational risk.
This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week and is performed primarily on-site, requiring regular in-person interaction with employees, leaders, committees, and workplace environments to support disability management, wellness initiatives, workplace inspections, investigations, and occupational health and safety activities across the organization.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Graduate of a recognized post-secondary education program preferably in Human Resource Management, Business Administration or related field.
- Completion of an appropriate program and/or actively working toward professional credentials in Ability/Disability Case Management
- Minimum two (2) years of progressive experience in disability management, wellness, and occupational health and safety.
- Demonstrated knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and best practices
- Experience conducting workplace inspections, investigations, and ergonomic principles
- Strong communication, documentation, analytical, and collaboration skills
ASSETS
- Previous experience in a unionized, healthcare and/or non-profit environment an asset.
- Experience and working knowledge of Ontario Human Rights Code, AODA, Occupational Health and Safety, WSIB and any other relevant legislation.
- Experience supporting return-to-work programs, disability management processes and ergonomic assessments.
- JOHSC Certification or actively working towards
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- Office-based role with frequent interactions across departments and teams
- Requirement to work Monday to Friday in a very busy office environment with many interruptions.
- Requirement to simultaneously manage multiple competing priorities and deadlines.
- Possibility of being required to work beyond standard hours (may include weekends).
Employment Requirements
Successful applicants are required provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.
Additionally, to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment.
