Incident Investigation Specialist

The Incident Investigation Specialist leads routine incident investigations and supports complex investigations, ensuring a fair, objective, and consistent process. Working closely with operational leaders, Health and Safety teams, unions, and other stakeholders, the role coordinates investigations, gathers and analyzes information, identifies root causes and contributing factors, and develops recommendations to prevent recurrence.

The Specialist also supports corrective action implementation, provides guidance on investigation best practices, and contributes to the continuous improvement of investigation processes, training, reporting, regulatory compliance, and organizational learning.

Responsibilities

• Acting as lead investigator in low level safety incident investigations. Ensuring proper procedures, investigation documentation and lessons learned are documented and actioned on.
• Support through coaching and mentoring supervisors on how to conduct streamlined preliminary incident data collection.
• Ensure that investigation is initiated and completed in a timely and efficient time frame -and- coordinate the proper people and departments ensuring they’re included in the investigation and resulting actions, including witnesses and parties involved with an incident.
• Compile post investigation reports and presentations to highlight lessons learned and develop process improvements.
• Presenting to managers on lessons learned following the investigation.
• Coordinates audit preparations for external audits/inspections and supports the HSE Team in the conduct/completion of internal departmental auditing.
• Supports HSE in the facilitation of continual improvement initiatives, tracks HSE internal training/PD, Collects analyzes, interprets HSE data, compiles reports.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in OHS, Quality/Management Systems, Risk Management, or equivalent experience.
• 5 to 8 years of experience in investigative and/or operational environments, with exposure to industrial settings preferred.
• Experience conducting incident investigations using root cause analysis methods (RCA, 5 Whys, etc.).
• Knowledge of HSE systems, safety legislation, regulatory requirements, and investigation best practices.
• Ability to analyze incidents, identify root causes, develop corrective actions, and prepare clear reports.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, stakeholder engagement, and relationship-building skills.
• Sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion when handling confidential or sensitive matters.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and data/document management systems.
• Lean Six Sigma or continuous improvement training is an asset.

Due to the nature of work Irving Shipbuilding does, all successful applicants must meet requirements for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Please note this position requires a full-time, in-office presence.
