The Role

Kingston Fire and Rescue is currently recruiting Volunteer Firefighters for the following volunteer based stations.

Meet your department...

We protect lives, property, and the environment through emergency response, fire prevention, and public education. Our team responds to fires and emergencies, conducts inspections, and delivers safety programs that keep Kingston prepared and resilient.

What You'll Do...

As a Volunteer Firefighter, you will respond frequently to emergencies in your assigned area. Calls may pertain to firefighting, rescue work, medical assistance, hazardous materials, activated alarms, and other types of emergency situations.

Maintain the fire station, apparatus, equipment, station maintenance, and communications.

Promote fire safety through programs, displays, and promotional material supplied by the Fire Department.

Attend regular weekend, weekly, and mandatory training sessions.

Other duties as assigned.

To qualify, you'll need...

Grade 12 diploma or acceptable equivalent in education (verification will be required)

Must possess a valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and clean driving record (0 demerit points) and maintain a DZ driver’s license which must be obtained within 18 months of the completion of the recruit training program

Experience and/or training in firefighting, emergency medical response, or a licensed trade would be considered an asset

Experience coaching, counseling, or educating the public would be considered an asset

Must enjoy working with the public and be willing to dedicate the time required to successfully complete the recruit – training program consisting of approximately 24 weeks of training.

Recruit training will take place primarily one evening per week from 1900-2130, and one day on the weekend from 0800-1600 hours. At the end of the recruit training program, you will be certified under the following regulations, which will align with O. Reg. 343/22: Firefighter Certification that comes into effect on July 1, 2026.

  • NFPA 1001 Level 1, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications
  • NFPA 1001 Level 2, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications
  • NFPA 1072, Hazmat Operations

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

Background/knowledge of technical trades, safety practices and training in Occupational Health and Safety would be considered an asset

Candidates must be physically fit to fulfill the role of this position and be a highly motivated team player

Must meet prescribed hearing and vision requirements of NFPA 1582: Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments (20/30 in each eye WITHOUT corrective lenses and color vision for Firefighting)

Speak, read and write English fluently, and communicate clearly and precisely under demanding, high-pressure situations

Must be available on short notice, be able to work flexible hours, and live within the immediate area of the fire stations that are being recruited for

Must have the ability to work in all types of weather under less than ideal conditions

Successful candidates will be required to provide satisfactory medical assessments

Successful candidates must obtain and maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check), including the Vulnerable Sector

Successful candidates shall maintain a satisfactory call and training attendance of 35% for Weekly Training and 35% of Emergency Call attendance annually once the recruit training has been successfully completed and members are responding to emergency calls. This 35% attendance rate translates to approximately 70-140 emergency calls and 18 weekly training nights annually.
