Overview
This position is Temporary Part-Time for approximately 12 months.

This role supports programs across a variety of city owned facilities, including the new Cowan Recreation Centre, located at RBJ Schlegel Park. Opening in late 2026, this state-of-the-art, all-season, multi-use complex will feature a large aquatics centre, FIFA-sized indoor turf field, quad gymnasium, indoor walking track, cricket practice nets, and flexible multipurpose spaces for programs, fitness classes, and events.
We are seeking a dedicated Sports Instructor to lead sports for a variety of age ranges. An ideal candidate will have experience in various sport disciplines, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to fostering physical activity in a safe and welcoming environment.
Please note: Schedules are determined seasonally based on program participation and operational needs, with a maximum of 24 hours per week. Programs are offered seven days a week, with shifts available from early morning through late evening. As some shifts may fall outside of public transit operating hours, reliable transportation is required.
Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver engaging sports programs for participants, creating lesson and learning plans that accommodate a variety of skill levels and interests.
- Demonstrate and reinforce safe movement practices, rules for sports, and the appropriate use of equipment while monitoring participant safety throughout each class
- Gather and organize necessary sports supplies and equipment.
- Maintain accurate records, including class attendance and accident/incident reports, and distribute relevant forms and program information.
- Ensure sports equipment is used safely, kept in good condition, and stored properly.
- Respond to participants' immediate concerns and needs, providing excellent customer service: Act as a liaison between participants and the facility promoting a positive program experience
- Provide first aid as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education
- Minimum high school diploma and current technical and practical training in a related discipline.
Experience
- Minimum of one year of related experience.
- Experience providing instruction within a program setting.

- Be able to work flexible hours including daytime, evening, weekends, and holidays, depending on the needs of the program.
- Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check at your own expense as a condition of employment.
- Valid Emergency First Aid and CPR Level “C” or willing to obtain prior to start date.

- Demonstrated knowledge of sport-specific skills, techniques, rules and instructional methods
- Ability to plan, organize and lead safe, engaging and age-appropriate sport and recreation programs.

- Ability to provide clear instruction and constructive feedback to participants of varying ages and abilities
