Overview
This position is Temporary Part-Time for approximately 12 months.

This role supports programs across a variety of city owned facilities, including the new Cowan Recreation Centre, located at RBJ Schlegel Park. Opening in late 2026, this state-of-the-art, all-season, multi-use complex will feature a large aquatics centre, FIFA-sized indoor turf field, quad gymnasium, indoor walking track, cricket practice nets, and flexible multipurpose spaces for programs, fitness classes, and events.
We are seeking a passionate Fitness Instructor to lead and deliver engaging classes across a variety of fitness disciplines. Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic, adaptable, and available to instruct group fitness classes during daytime, evening, and weekend hours. A recognized group fitness certification is required.
Please note: Schedules are determined seasonally based on program participation and operational needs, with a maximum of 24 hours per week. Programs are offered seven days a week, with shifts available from early morning through late evening. As some shifts may fall outside of public transit operating hours, reliable transportation is required.
Responsibilities
- Prepares and conducts appropriate programs for participants following required standards.
- Demonstrates and instructs assigned activities and techniques using established teaching methodology and procedures; provides feedback to participants.
- Explain and ensure safety rules and regulations governing sports, recreation activities and the use of equipment are followed.
- Assembles supplies and equipment as required.
- Completes records and reports including class attendance and accident/incident reports. Distributes applicable forms and program information.
- Ensure safe use, condition and storage of any equipment.
- Responds to participants’ immediate concerns and or needs and provides customer service.
- Acts as a liaison between the facility and participants.
- Provides first aid as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education
- Minimum high school diploma and current technical and practical training in a specific discipline as outlined above and/or be a certified fitness or certified wellness instructor.
- Certified fitness instructor (Can Fit Pro or equivalent).
Experience
- Minimum of one year of related experience.
- Experience providing instruction within a program setting.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
- Be able to work flexible hours including daytime, evening, weekends, and holidays, depending on the needs of the program.
- Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check at your own expense as a condition of employment.
- Valid Emergency First Aid and CPR Level “C” or willing to obtain prior to start date.

- Excellent interpersonal communication (written and oral), customer service, and behaviour management skills.
- Ability to motivate a diverse group of participants
- Ability to adapt workouts to different fitness levels and abilities.
- Skills in customer service and client relationship management

- Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
