Salary: $2,590.61- $3,109.98 bi-weekly, as per the Technician Grade 4 Classification within the C.U.P.E. Collective Agreement.

Job Profile

AsbestosTechnician/Carpenter-ProjectServicesworksunderthegeneral supervision of the Supervisor of Program Services and in partnership with one other Asbestos Technician / Carpenter and two Technicians, who together are responsible to maintain, review, and record all asbestos containing materials in buildings owned by the City of Winnipeg and maintained by the Municipal Accommodations Branch.

AstheAsbestosTechnician/Carpenter,you Will

  • Performannualbuildinginspectionsfollowingallrequirementsofthe Province of Manitoba Asbestos Management Regulations and Legislation.
  • Performabatement,repairand encapsulation.
  • Contract Administration.
  • ProvidesupporttoMunicipalAccommodationsemployeesfor maintenance and construction projects.
  • ProvidesupporttoCityemployeesintheeventofasbestosand/or hazardous material related emergencies.
    • Note:thisdutyhasthepotentialtobeperformedinahighstress environment with City employees with little to no knowledge of asbestos/hazardous materials.
  • Handleandremovevariousotherhazardous materials.
  • Perform other assigned duties that fall within the classification as required.

Your Education And Qualifications Include

  • JourneypersonCarpenterCertificate withRed Seal.
  • Minimum36monthsrelatedworkexperienceasamulti-discipline Journeyperson Carpenter.
  • Demonstratedabilityto produce accurate workingdrawings from sketches(buildingfloorplansandelevations,systemschematics, etc.).
  • Demonstratedabilitytoreadandinterpretbuildingdrawingsand construction specifications.
  • DemonstratedproficiencyusingcurrentversionofAutoCadsoftwareto produce electronic drawings.
  • DemonstratedabilityintheuseofMicrosoftOfficeSoftwareincluding Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Demonstratedabilitytocommunicateeffectivelybothorallyand written.
  • Projectmanagement skills.
  • Abilitytousehandtools,powertoolsandothertools/measuring instruments required to perform the duties of the position.
  • Abilitytoproducequalityfinishing work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employeesatalllevelsoftheorganization,externalcontactsandthe public.
  • Abilitytoworkindependentlywithminimumsupervisionandina team and be able to organize tasks efficiently.
  • Abilitytoexerciseinitiativeandsound judgment.
  • Must have or be able to acquire in a reasonable period of time, a thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautionsandregulationsthatareapplicabletotheposition'sareaof work.

Conditions Of Employment

  • The successful candidate must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful candidate possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
  • MustpossessandmaintainavalidManitobaJourneypersonCarpenter Certificate with Red Seal.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License.Thesuccessfulapplicantwillberequiredtoprovideadriver'snoticein force document upon request.
  • A Winnipeg Police Service Level 2 Security Clearance and in-depth background check satisfactory to the employer will be required from theapplicant(s)orsuccessfulcandidate(s).Thispositionmayrequire a Level 3 Security Clearance from the Winnipeg Police Service.
  • AChildAbuseRegistryChecksatisfactorytotheemployerwillbe required from the successful candidate, at their expense.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position including the ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, ability to lift, carry, setup and climb long portable extensionladdersandscaffolding,useoffallprotectionequipment, operate/work in bucket/lift equipment, and work at all heights and confined spaces as required by work assignments.
  • Mustbeabletowearaproperlyfittedair-purifyinghalffacebreathing respirator, Tyvek suit and other personal protective equipment as required by the work assignment and the ability to work with and in very close proximity to a variety of hazardous materials including asbestos, mould, PCBs, lead, etc.
  • The successful applicant may be required to work in confined areas andhazardouslocationswherethewearingofself-containedbreathing equipment is necessary due to lack of oxygen and/or presence of harmful gases.
  • Possessionof,orabilitytoobtain,trainingtofastenitemstoasbestos containing materials.
  • Mustcompleterequiredtrainingintheuseofspecializedequipment, such as scissor lifts, forklifts, etc. within a specified time frame and take upgrading courses as required.
  • Completionof3day"AsbestosAwarenessControlinBuildingsand Industry in Manitoba" within six (6) months of starting the position.
  • CompletionofSt.John'sAmbulanceFirstAid1within three ( 3)monthsof starting the position.
  • Mustbeabletoworkeveningsandweekendsas required.
  • The successful applicant(s) will be required to provide CSA Grade 1 approvedpersonalprotectivesafetybootsorshoewithdefinedheelat their own expense.
