About the Client
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 96-year-old woman in Lindsay, Ontario who is transitioning home after a 7-week hospital stay. She experienced a choking incident that required intubation and an induced coma, resulting in significant deconditioning. While she was previously ambulatory, she now uses a walker or wheelchair and requires assistance with most daily activities. She is on a waitlist for long-term care and needs overnight support to bridge the gap until placement becomes available. The client lives in an apartment building and will have government-funded PSW coverage from 6 AM to 6 PM daily.
Responsibilities
- Provide overnight personal care including toileting, hygiene assistance, and incontinence management
- Assist with mobility using walker or wheelchair as needed
- Prepare and assist with feeding for meals and snacks if client wakes during the night
- Administer medication reminders and assistance as needed
- Provide cognitive support and supervision for safety, as client has experienced some delirium
- Monitor for signs of UTI or other health concerns and communicate with family
- Ensure client is clean, dry, and comfortable throughout the shift
- Maintain a calm, patient presence during overnight hours
What We're Looking For
- Female caregiver preferred due to client comfort and dignity concerns
- Valid PSW certification required
- Experience with post-hospital care and senior clients
- Ability to perform transfers and assist with mobility devices
- Strong personal care skills including toileting and incontinence care
- Patient, gentle approach with clients who may be confused or resistant
- Reliable and consistent attendance
- English speaking
- Comfortable working independently overnight
- Experience with clients who have experienced deconditioning or cognitive changes
Schedule
Overnight shifts, 7 days per week. Preferred schedule is approximately 6 hours per night, ideally starting around 11 PM or midnight and continuing through early morning. The goal is to provide coverage during the 12-hour gap when government-funded PSW is not present (6 PM to 6 AM), with at least one check-in and care session during the night to ensure client is not left alone for extended periods. Flexibility on exact timing within the overnight window. This is anticipated to be temporary care until long-term care placement becomes available, timeline uncertain but could range from one week to two months.
