About The Role

About the Role

The Awake Overnight Respite Support Aide provides direct overnight support in the child’s home. This position is responsible for maintaining awake supervision throughout the shift, supporting the child’s care needs, and responding promptly to health, safety, comfort, and mobility needs.

The child supported in this role has medical needs, including an NG tube and a specialized diet, and requires frequent monitoring overnight. The successful candidate must be confident providing attentive care, following established care plans, and working safely with a child who uses a small wheelchair.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide awake overnight supervision and active monitoring from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
  • Support the child in the home environment using a calm, patient, and trauma-informed approach.
  • Follow the child’s established care plan, including medical and dietary directions related to NG tube care and specialized diet requirements.
  • Monitor the child frequently throughout the night and respond appropriately to changes in comfort, positioning, health status, or support needs.
  • Assist with bedtime, overnight routines, repositioning, personal care, and morning transition support as required.
  • Support safe transfers, mobility, and positioning for a child who uses a small wheelchair.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized care environment during the shift.
  • Communicate clearly with parents/guardians and supervisors regarding overnight observations, concerns, and incidents.
  • Complete accurate and timely shift documentation, daily logs, and incident reports as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow all BrightStar Respite policies, health and safety requirements, and professional standards.

Qualifications

Required Experience And Skills

  • Experience supporting children or youth with complex behavioural, developmental, or medical needs.
  • Ability to remain awake, alert, and attentive for the full overnight shift.
  • Comfort working in a family home environment and providing one-to-one support.
  • Strong observation, communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed care directions and respond appropriately in urgent or changing situations.
  • Physical ability to support transfers, positioning, and mobility needs.
  • Ability to lift 50-75 lbs safely.

Medical and Role-Specific Requirements

  • Experience working with children with medical needs is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with NG tube-related care, specialized diets, or medically complex care is a strong asset.
  • Experience supporting children who use mobility equipment, including wheelchairs, is an asset.

Required Certifications and Clearances

  • CPR & First Aid Level C or equivalent.
  • Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check, completed within the last 6 months.
  • Child Intervention Record Check, completed within the last 6 months.

  • Reliable means of getting to and from work locations throughout Edmonton (personal vehicle, transit, or other dependable transportation)

Assets (not Required, But Valued)

  • Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Mandt, or equivalent
  • Training or coursework in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) or other autism-specific frameworks
  • Familiarity with CARF and FSCD standards
  • Knowledge of or connection to Indigenous cultures, communities, or languages
  • Previous summer camp, recreation programming, or group facilitation experience
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's Licence with access to a reliable vehicle

$26.77-$29.35 per hour
