About the Role

The Awake Overnight Youth Support Worker provides direct overnight support in the child’s home and is responsible for maintaining awake supervision for the full shift. This role supports the child’s safety, comfort, health, and routine during overnight hours while ensuring care is delivered respectfully and consistently within the established support plan.

The child supported in this role has medical needs, including an NG tube and a specialized diet, and requires frequent monitoring overnight. The successful candidate must be comfortable supporting a child who uses a small wheelchair and must be physically able to assist with lifting, mobility, transfers, and positioning needs in a safe manner.

Key Responsibilities

Overnight Child Support

  • Provide direct, trauma-informed overnight care and awake supervision in the child’s home.
  • Monitor the child frequently throughout the night and respond promptly to care, comfort, safety, and medical support needs.
  • Follow all established care directions related to NG tube support, specialized diet requirements, and overnight monitoring routines.
  • Support bedtime, overnight routines, repositioning, toileting, personal care, and morning transition as required.
  • Support safe mobility, transfers, and positioning for a child who uses a small wheelchair.

Health, Safety, and Home Support

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized care environment during the shift.
  • Observe for changes in health status, behaviour, comfort, or mobility and communicate concerns appropriately.
  • Follow all medication, feeding, safety, and emergency protocols as trained and directed.
  • Use sound judgment and remain calm in urgent, medically sensitive, or changing situations.

Documentation and Communication

  • Complete accurate and timely documentation including shift notes, incident reports, and relevant observations.
  • Participate in shift handovers and communicate clearly with caregivers and supervisors.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow all BrightStar Respite policies, professional standards, and privacy requirements.

Requirements

Qualifications & Education

Required Education

  • Diploma, certificate, or relevant training in a Human Services, Disability Support, Health Care Aide, Child and Youth Care, Educational Assistant, Nursing, or related field is an asset.
  • Equivalent direct experience supporting children or youth with complex needs may also be considered.

Required Experience

  • Experience supporting children or youth with medical, developmental, behavioural, or mobility-related needs.
  • Experience working in a home-based, respite, health support, or high-support care setting is strongly preferred.
  • Comfort supporting children with specialized routines, physical care needs, and overnight supervision requirements.

Required Certifications & Clearances

  • CPR & First Aid Level C (current).
  • Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check, completed within the last 6 months.
  • Child Intervention Record Check, completed within the last 6 months.

Role-Specific Requirements

  • Ability to work awake overnight shifts from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
  • Ability to support a child with medical needs, including NG tube-related care directions and specialized dietary requirements.
  • Ability to work with a child who uses a small wheelchair.
  • Ability to lift 50-75 lbs safely.

Assets (not required, but valued)

  • Experience with NG tube-related care, medically complex care, or specialized feeding routines.
  • Experience supporting children who use wheelchairs or other mobility equipment.
  • Training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Mandt, or other behaviour support approaches.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care, autism support strategies, or family-centred practice.

  • CPR First Aid Level C
  • Police Information Check (within 6 months)
  • Child Intervention Record Check (within 6 months)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's Licence and clear 3-year driver's abstract
  • Reliable personal vehicle with third-party liability insurance
  • Diploma or degree in a Human Services field (CYCW, Social Work, Psychology, Nursing, or Educational Assistant)

Candidates must also be able to safely perform the physical and medical-support demands of the role, including awake overnight work, frequent monitoring, wheelchair-related support, and lifting requirements.

$26.77-$29.35 per hour
