The Controller will be responsible for the overall reporting, compliance, and accounting functions of the Horizon Group of Companies holding corporation and its parent.
The Horizon Group of Companies are partnered together through investment and leadership from Horizon Atlantic Capital and represent a diversified group of companies spanning maritime services, naval engineering, Arctic development and new venture investment. It is an entrepreneurial platform designed to accelerate the multi-use projects, industries, partnerships and Indigenous inclusion essential to Canada's economic growth and sovereignty.
AEDC is currently recruiting on behalf of the Group, as focus will include supporting AEDC, Canada's dedicated Arctic infrastructure and logistics services provider.
ROLE SUMMARY
The Controller will deliver accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and financial management functions. Reporting to Group senior leadership, the Controller will oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial and management reporting, lead the month-end and year-end close processes, and ensure the integrity of the Company's financial records.
The Controller will lead budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis to support operational and strategic decision-making. They will also oversee corporate, tax, payroll, and regulatory compliance, manage the annual audit process, maintain effective internal controls, and coordinate with external advisors, financial institutions, and government agencies.
Working across multiple operating companies, the Controller will help build scalable financial systems and reporting processes that support the continued growth of the Horizon Group of Companies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Reporting and Accounting
- Oversee day to day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Lead month end and year end close processes.
- Review journal entries, invoice coding, allocations, reconciliations, and accounting queries.
- Analyze financial results against budgets, forecasts, and operating models.
- Communicate financial reporting packages and key findings to management.
Budgeting, Forecasting and Cash Management
- Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process, including templates, consolidation, analysis, and presentation of results.
- Prepare and monitor cash flow projections and working capital requirements.
- Support management with financial planning, variance analysis, and strategic decision making.
- Identify trends, risks, and opportunities in financial performance.
Corporate Compliance and Regulatory filings
- Ensure statutory and regulatory filings are completed accurately and on time.
- Prepare annual corporate returns, GST/HST filings, payroll remittances, Workers’ Compensation filings, T4s, T5s, and related reporting.
- Maintain corporate records and support tax compliance requirements.
- Monitor quarterly lender reporting and debt covenant compliance.
- Coordinate with external advisors and regulatory authorities as required.
Audit, Tax, and Internal controls
- Lead the annual year-end process, including working papers, supporting schedules, consolidation activities, and draft financial statements.
- Liaise with auditors, tax advisors, legal counsel, financial institutions, and government agencies.
- Establish and maintain effective financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Support corporate income tax preparation and related external advisor requests.
Leadership and Administration
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting systems, and operating efficiencies.
- Participate in management meetings and contribute to organizational planning.
- Review accounts receivable aging and support collection follow up with operational management.

QUALIFICATIONS
- CPA designation required; public accounting experience preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including financial reporting and full cycle accounting.
- Experience leading external audits and managing financial reporting processes.
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and project management abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial systems.
- Knowledge of tax compliance and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Supervisory or management experience is an asset.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently or collaboratively.
