About Phytokana Ingredients Inc.

Phytokana is an independent Alberta-based innovator, processor, developer and distributor of novel, sustainable pulse ingredients for use in diverse applications in the food, beverage and baked goods industries. We are building a plant protein innovation hub in Strathmore, Alberta – our processing facility will sustainably source novel pulse crops to produce high-purity protein concentrates and low and high protein flours from our low emissions fractionation facility.

Role Overview

The Finance Manager will play a key role in building and leading Phytokana’s finance function as the Company advances through facility construction, ERP implementation, commissioning, and commercial operations. This role will be responsible for core accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, budget-to-actual analysis, financial analysis, capital reporting, government grant reporting, and supporting sustainability-related reporting.

Working closely with senior leadership, operations, project management, and external stakeholders, the Finance Manager will help establish scalable financial systems, controls, reporting processes, and analytical tools to support Phytokana’s growth. This position will also lead accounts receivable and accounts payable personnel and support the development of a high-performing finance team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting & Accounting: Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting and financial reporting processes, including preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements, monthly management reporting, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules..
  • Tax & Compliance Support: Will coordinate GST filings, and will assist with the preparation of corporate income taxes and other statutory filings
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Support the development and maintenance of annual budgets, rolling forecasts, cash flow forecasts, and scenario analyses to support management decision-making.
  • Budget-to-Actual Reporting: Prepare and analyze monthly budget-to-actual reporting, identifying key variances, business drivers, risks, and opportunities. Provide clear reporting and commentary to senior leadership.
  • Capital Project Reporting: Assist with developing and maintaining monthly capital reporting during facility construction, including tracking project costs against budget, commitments, managing purchase orders, change orders, AFEs, and forecasted capital requirements.
  • ERP Implementation: Support the implementation, configuration, and ongoing optimization of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or similar ERP systems, with a focus on financial reporting, controls, workflows, and process automation.
  • Government Grant Reporting: Lead and provide oversight to AR/AP personnel, ensuring accurate, timely, and controlled processing of invoices, payments, collections, vendor records, and customer accounts.
  • Internal Controls & Process Development: Develop and improve accounting policies, financial controls, approval workflows, reporting processes, and documentation to support a growing business and future audit requirements.
  • Audit & External Reporting Support: Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, tax advisors, grant administrators, lenders, and other stakeholders to support audits, compliance reporting, tax filings, and financial due diligence. Assist with reporting to Audit Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Sustainability Reporting Support: Assist with sustainability-related reporting, including supporting data collection, financial inputs, grant-related reporting, and emerging ESG or emissions-related reporting requirements.
  • Financial Analysis: Work with the Data Science Engineer to develop financial analysis and data-driven insights from ERP system other operating data. Support the development of dashboards, KPIs, and analytical tools that improve management reporting and decision-making.
  • Technology, Automation & AI: Identify opportunities to use technology, automation, data analytics, and AI tools to improve reporting quality, reduce manual work, and enhance the finance function’s effectiveness.
  • Teamwork: Demonstrate strong leadership skills in developing AR/AP personnel. Work collaboratively with operations, engineering, food science, marketing, and executive leadership to provide financial insight and support disciplined business decision-making.

  • You have strong leadership skills and can develop AR/AP personnel while maintaining high standards for accuracy, accountability, and timeliness.
  • You are proactive, organized, and comfortable managing multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders.
  • You are comfortable working with data, dashboards, and business intelligence tools, including Power BI, to translate operational and financial information into clear reporting and actionable insights.
  • You have an interest in using technology, automation, and AI to improve financial reporting and business processes.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation required.
  • 5–10 years of progressive accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, or operational finance experience.
  • Experience in food and beverage, agriculture, food processing, manufacturing, construction, or capital project environments is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, month-end close processes, account reconciliations, accrual accounting, internal controls, and management reporting.
  • Experience with capital project reporting, construction cost tracking, or project accounting is considered an asset.
  • Experience with government grant reporting, funding agreements, claims preparation, or compliance reporting is considered an asset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience with Corporate Taxes is preferred.
  • Experience with ERP implementation, system migration, process design, or finance workflow automation is considered an asset.
  • Strong Excel, PowerBI/dashboarding, financial modelling, and analytical skills.
  • Familiarity with sustainability, ESG, emissions, or grant-related reporting is considered an asset.
  • Interest or experience using AI tools to improve finance, reporting, forecasting, or business processes is considered an asset.

Work Environment

  • Construction Phase: The role will be primarily based in Calgary, Alberta, with periodic travel to Strathmore, Alberta to support facility construction, capital reporting, operational readiness, and process development.
  • Post-Start-Up: The role will be largely based in Calgary, with ongoing interaction with the Strathmore facility.
