About the Client
We're seeking a compassionate overnight caregiver for a woman in the later stages of ALS who requires assistance with mobility and personal care. She has lost approximately 80-90% of her mobility and weighs under 90 pounds due to significant muscle tissue loss. Despite her physical limitations, she can feed herself when meals are prepared and remains alert throughout the night. She experiences discomfort due to limited tissue padding and requires repositioning every 1-2 hours to manage pain.
Responsibilities
Your primary role will be providing overnight support from 10:00 PM to 10:00 AM on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Evening duties include assisting with bedtime preparation: light washing, changing into nightclothes, toileting, teeth brushing, and safely transferring her into bed (requires two-person assist with family member present). Throughout the night, you'll help reposition her every 1-2 hours as needed, using pillows for comfort and support. You'll assist with transfers to the commode or electric-powered wheelchair as required. Morning responsibilities include helping her get up, washed, dressed, and ready for the day. Light tidying around the home is appreciated.
What We're Looking For
We need someone who makes the client feel comfortable and brings a calm, patient presence. You should be reliable, consistent, and able to take initiative when needed. Strong communication skills with the family are essential. Experience with ALS care, transfer techniques, and mobility assistance is highly valued. You must be comfortable with bathing, dressing, and personal care support. The ideal caregiver understands the physical demands of repositioning throughout the night and can do so safely and gently.
Schedule
This position requires overnight shifts from 10:00 PM to 10:00 AM on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. The schedule runs for approximately three months during the summer season at the family's cottage in Buckhorn (near Curve Lake, east of Peterborough). You'll sleep in the same room as the client—either in a chair or on a queen-size bed—so you can respond immediately when she needs repositioning or assistance. You're expected to remain alert to her needs but may rest between care intervals. Travel time from Peterborough (approximately 30 minutes) should be factored into your schedule.
English-speaking caregivers only. This is a meaningful opportunity to provide dignified, compassionate care during a challenging time.
