About the role

Couples Therapy Ottawa is built around a simple idea: do one thing and do it really well. We're growing slowly and intentionally, bringing on therapists who are truly passionate about couples therapy as a core focus of their career.

In short, we're building a team of specialists, not generalists.

As an independent contractor who is part of the team, you can expect a lot of freedom in your clinical work. And you'll be supported to further refine and develop your own unique style of therapy; a style rooted in research-backed interventions and your own authentic touch. The balance of art and science that is psychotherapy.

Group supervision is also organized once per month and is an opportunity to sit with other couples therapists to share case conceptualizations, share your own and support others' experiences of countertransference, and to feel supported in your professional development. It's also a lovely opportunity to be a part of a community of like-minded therapy nerds. We need each other.

Who we are looking for

We're less focused on an extensive work history and more interested in who you are: your personality, your warmth, and your genuine passion for couples therapy. Our ideal candidate reads attachment theory books because they find them fascinating and always want to learn more, not just because they were assigned in a course.

You don't need to be an expert in every major couples therapy modality, but you do need to have a solid, working understanding of one modality and feel confident using it to conceptualize and guide your sessions.

A strong foundation in attachment styles, core human attachment needs, and the basics of developmental psychology is important for this role.

Ideal candidates will have a strong working knowledge of — and genuine passion for — supporting individuals and couples who are polyamorous or practicing ENM. Additionally, candidates who identify as 2SLGBTQ+ are especially encouraged to apply. Jeff Shepherd (practice owner) is a member of the community, and many early referrals will likely be couples who identify as queer and/or trans and are eager to work with a therapist within their community.

Education minimums

  • MA Counselling or related field
  • Formal couples therapy training such as courses in EFT, Gottman, RLT, PACT, IFIO or other attachment based programs.

Supervision

We will provide you with one hour of individual, one-on-one supervision with RP Jeff Shepherd each month, as well as two hours of monthly group supervision.
