As a member of the interprofessional team, the Registered Nurse is responsible for providing expertise in psychiatric nursing services, including management and administration of medication in conjunction with the team psychiatrist and other nurses on the team; assessing the unique needs of clients with additional physical complications; making appropriate referrals to community services; and providing consultation to Registered Practical Nurses on more complex client needs. The Registered Nurse also contributes to the development of comprehensive client-centred assessments and treatment and recovery plans; and service coordination for an assigned group of clients that includes providing a range of treatment, rehabilitation and support services.
Required Qualifications And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing
- Current and unrestricted registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Minimum of three years of nursing experience providing care to adults with serious mental illness, in additon to:
- At least 2 years of community-based nursing experience; mental health setting preferred
- Experience working in a wide range of community settings, including clients’ homes
Position Responsibilities
- Develops effective therapeutic relationships including developing shared understanding of the individual’s lived and living experience with the illness
- Takes a lead role or participates in providing medication administration and medical services
- Provides ongoing assessment, problem-solving, side-by-side services, skill training, supervision (e.g. prompts, assignments, monitoring, encouragement), and environmental adaptations to assist individuals with activities of daily living
- Assists individuals to plan and structure social and leisure-time activities on evenings, weekends and holidays, through the use of natural supports and community resources
- Contributes to the planning for and provision of work-related supportive services, such as assistance with grooming and personal hygiene, securing of appropriate clothing, and transportation consistent with the individualized placement support model
