Preventative Maintenance Specialist
Location: Facility Services
Term position: August 4, 2026 to July 16, 2027 with possibility of extension
40 hours weekly, paid on the Specialist grid
Red Deer Public Schools is seeking a skilled and motivated Preventative Maintenance Specialist to join our Facility Services team. This position plays an important role in ensuring our schools and Division facilities remain safe, efficient, and well-maintained through scheduled preventative maintenance, inspections, testing, and minor repairs.
Working collaboratively with the HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, and General Maintenance teams, the successful candidate will help maximize the life of building systems, identify maintenance concerns before failures occur, and support the ongoing operation of Division facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and building systems.
- Complete routine inspections and minor maintenance repairs.
- Assist Journeyperson trades staff with maintenance projects.
- Inspect, service, and maintain HVAC equipment, including filter changes, belt replacements, lubrication, and equipment cleaning.
- Monitor and record equipment operating conditions, temperatures, pressures, and boiler room logs.
- Inspect mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, rooftops, crawlspaces, and other building systems, reporting deficiencies requiring corrective maintenance.
- Support seasonal startup, shutdown, commissioning, and winterization activities.
- Complete preventative maintenance work orders and maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Procure and maintain inventory of maintenance materials and supplies.
- Maintain clean, organized maintenance and mechanical spaces.
- Respond to emergency maintenance requests and participate in after-hours callouts as required.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's License.
- WHMIS Certification.
- Minimum three (3) years of commercial or institutional building maintenance experience.
- Experience performing preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment, including rooftop units, air handling units, heat pumps, and exhaust systems.
- Working knowledge of plumbing and electrical building systems.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multiple trades.
The following would be considered assets:
- Fall Protection Certification.
- Elevated Work Platform Certification.
- Experience using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Ability to interpret equipment manuals, maintenance schedules, and construction drawings.
Working Conditions
This position involves physically demanding work in both indoor and outdoor environments, including frequent lifting, climbing ladders, kneeling, bending, and working in mechanical rooms, crawlspaces, rooftops, and other confined spaces. The successful candidate must be able to safely lift up to 50 lbs and work from ladders and aerial lift devices.
