Overview

The Placement Services Team in the Office of the Dean is comprised of a number of Placement Officers across two campuses who each carry out portfolios of work relating to the placement components of all undergraduate programs within the Faculty of Education. This includes the Bachelor of Education, Technology Education, and the Keewatinase Indigenous Teacher Education (KITEP) Programs. Placement Officers, under the direct supervision of the Placement Services Coordinator, perform extensive outreach with Associate Teachers, school boards and other placement sites to carefully match and place Teacher Candidates for the practicum components of their respective programs.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out extensive outreach with K-12 schools, Associate Teachers, administrators, and Indigenous education authorities in local and regional communities, fostering strong relationships to build and maintain a strong network of Associate Teachers across the province.
  • Work closely with schools in remote and Indigenous communities, supporting Teacher Candidates and Associate Teachers in the Keewatinase Indigenous Teacher Education (KITEP) program while understanding the unique qualities of the language and culture for this group of learners and teachers.
  • Perform advanced administrative workflows and processes with a very high degree of organization and data accuracy; this includes reviewing and interpreting hundreds of student records, composing detailed documents, maintaining extensive and detailed databases and spreadsheets, sorting and filtering, running reports and queries, triaging and responding to high volumes of emails and correspondence.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team of Placement Officers under the direct supervision of the Placement Services Coordinator, and alongside Program Chairs and Division Coordinators, matching appropriate subject-area and grade placements for all students in keeping with university, provincial government, and Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) regulations in order to ensure a successful placement experience for both the Teacher Candidates and the Associate Teachers.
  • Maintain an accounting system for stipends related to placements and prepare the appropriate financial requisitions for payment; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in business, education or a field related to the duties of the position, or an equivalent combination of education and closely related work experience.
  • A functional knowledge of the K-12 education sector in Ontario, as well as school environments in remote and Indigenous communities.
  • A comprehensive understanding and experienced awareness of the unique needs of Indigenous students, Indigenous community protocols, communication styles, funding organizations and community structures is a requirement.
  • Highly proficient in Google Workspace and Drive, Adobe, Zoom, and experience in updating website content.
  • Advanced-level skills in creating and managing detailed and highly complex databases and spreadsheets in Google Sheets and Google Forms, and the ability to learn and adapt to new software platforms and administrative systems.
  • Familiarity with Ontario College of Teachers’ regulations, oversight and guidelines are an asset.
  • Familiarity with Lakehead University internal platforms such as Datatel Colleague, Concur and Navigator systems an asset.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to perform all duties in a confidential and highly professional manner.
  • Ability to multitask and work collaboratively within a multi-functional team, under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Familiarity with university policies, procedures (e.g., collective agreement, Calendar regulations, Senate policies) an asset.
