About The Role
We are seeking a strategic and hands-on Financial Controller to lead the accounting and financial reporting functions for a diverse real estate portfolio. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role combines technical depth in real estate accounting with leadership responsibility across financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and audit coordination.
As a key financial leader, you will translate complex property-level and consolidated financial data into actionable insights to support investment decisions, operational performance, and long-term growth.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close Management
· Close Cycle Lead: Manage the full-cycle month-end and year-end close process for multiple property entities and the consolidated corporate entity, ensuring strict adherence to GAAP.
· Reporting: Prepare and deliver timely, decision-grade financial reporting packages for executive leadership, the Board of Directors, and external stakeholders
· Recoveries & Escalations: Oversee the accuracy of Common Area Maintenance (CAM), realty tax, insurance recoveries, and lease-based escalations, including tenant reconciliations.
Yardi Voyager & Accounting Systems Leadership
· Subject Matter Expert: Serve as the internal authority on Yardi Voyager, managing workflows, data integrity, and leveraging advanced modules (e.g., Job Cost, Consolidations, Forecasting).
· Portfolio Oversight: Supervise property-level and corporate accounting, ensuring precise tracking of rental income, operating expenses, capital expenditures, and tenant ledgers.
· Process Optimization: Continuously evaluate and streamline accounting processes and software systems to enhance scalability and accuracy. Partner with operational leaders and IT to enhance system integration, reporting automation, and data accuracy across the organization.
Budgeting, Compliance & Strategy
· Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead annual budgeting, monthly reporting, and long-range financial planning, providing detailed variance analysis and actionable insights. Oversight of multi-entity structures, including joint ventures and consolidated reporting environments.
· Audit & Tax Liaison: Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory bodies, ensuring timely delivery of audit-ready schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
· Regulatory & Risk: Design, implement, and continuously enhance internal control frameworks to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with lender covenants and regulatory requirements.
· Cash Flow: Assist in monitoring property liquidity and managing debt service compliance.
Leadership
· Team Development: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team across the Finance Department’s various functions, promoting accountability, continuous improvement, and succession planning.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
· 3+ years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience, with at least 2 years in a management or supervisory capacity (e.g., Controller, Assistant Controller or Accounting Manager).
· Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
· Demonstrated experience within commercial, multi-residential, condominium, retirement living, hospitality or real estate development environments.
· Strong understanding of GAAP and income tax basis accounting specifically tailored to real estate investments.
· Advanced, hands-on experience with Yardi Voyager is preferred. Expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and experience leveraging automation, business intelligence, and AI-enabled tools to improve reporting efficiency.
· Ability to distill complex financial data into clear, concise summaries for non-financial stakeholders.
· Strong problem-solving mindset with the ability to interpret data and mitigate financial risks.
