Food Hub Coordinator
Bright Lights for Africa
WE'RE HIRING: Food Hub Coordinator
Location: Calgary, AB (Onsite)
Type: Full-time (35 hours/week; some evenings/weekends required)
Reports To: Executive Director
Are you passionate about food justice, grassroots leadership, and building sustainable community ecosystems?
Bright Lights For Africa (BLFA) is seeking a visionary, hands-on Food Hub Coordinator to spearhead the day-to-day operations of our SBCCI-funded Black Food Hub. This is not just an operational role, it is a cornerstone position designed to advance Black food sovereignty, dismantle systemic barriers to food security, and celebrate the rich culinary heritage of African descent and Caribbean communities in Calgary.
If you are a logistics-minded leader who understands that food is culture, dignity, and community connection, we want you on our team.
The Role: Impact & Responsibilities
As the Food Hub Coordinator, you will bridge the gap between high-level community strategy and daily operational execution:
- Culturally Specific Procurement: Source authentic foods from African, Caribbean, and halal networks. You will actively prioritize and build partnerships with local vendors to design hampers and community menus that reflect true cultural and religious traditions.
- Hub Operations & Logistics: Mastermind the inventory, storage, food safety, and distribution systems, ensuring supply chains run seamlessly and respect culturally specific handling needs.
- Dignified Client Care & Navigation: Oversee trauma-informed client intake, hamper packing, and grocery card distribution. You will also provide vital system navigation, connecting community members to wraparound supports for long-term security.
- Data Systems & Funder Compliance: Configure and maintain our cloud-based intake system. You will collect disaggregated household data to generate key data briefs.
- Team Leadership & Engagement: Recruit, train, and inspire a diverse team of volunteers and casual staff. You will also co-design and host 3–4 major community meals and food events annually to foster trust and community ownership.
What You Bring (Skills & Strengths)
- Proven Track Record: Not less than one (1) year of direct, hands-on experience in community food programming, food bank operations, or culturally specific food security initiatives.
- Sector Experience: Proven experience in community food programming, food bank operations, or culturally specific food security initiatives.
- Deep Cultural Competence: Lived or professional knowledge of African, Caribbean, and halal food systems, traditions, and local supplier networks.
- Logistical Sharpness: Exceptional organizational skills with a knack for managing inventory, tracking budgets, and coordinating logistics.
- Tech Literacy: Experience working with cloud-based database systems, data collection, and translating metrics into basic reports.
- People-First Leadership: A compassionate, trauma-informed, and client-centered approach to service delivery, with a natural ability to motivate volunteer teams.
