Any day of the week from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

SALARY

Pay Grade 15 - $29.20 to $34.30 per hour

Responsible for tending to the horses and stables.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Clean out stalls and stable area
  • Mix and distribute food for horses according to prescribed schedules
  • Note and report injuries to animals or signs of illness
  • Administer treatment to horses as ordered
  • Assist the Mounted Unit police members when required
  • Walk horses for exercise
  • Assist in moving bulk feed and bedding
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Required

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment
  • Working knowledge of the care and feeding horses
  • Ability to carry out routine tasks in feeding and caring for horses
  • Ability to understand and interpret written and oral instructions
  • Ability to weigh materials and maintain simple records
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky objects such as baled straw and bags of feed up to 70 lbs.
  • Skill in handling and caring for horses

Preferred

  • Level 1 dressage riding ability

EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills required to tactfully deal with individuals at various levels, internally and externally, both in person and on the telephone
  • Ability to make sound decisions when dealing with difficult callers and members of the public
  • Experience in the care for horses
  • High degree of organizational skills and proven ability to organize and prioritize work in order to meet deadlines

Preferred

  • Experience training and working with horses

EDUCATION

Required

  • Grade 12
  • Member of the Horse Council of BC (HCBC)

Preferred

  • Basic equine first aid

AVAILIBILITY FOR CASUAL SHIFTS

  • Minimum of 21 hours a month
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical strength and agility, sufficient to meet the demands of the job: lifting, bending, reaching, and carrying, including moving heavy items (approximately 60 lbs.)
  • All employees must maintain their enhanced security clearance while employed with the Vancouver Police Department, which will be renewed every five years or as required
  • Canadian citizenship or Permanent Resident status

SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates will be required to pass a job interview and enhanced reliability clearance.
