Competition # E22537-2026

At NB Power we are a team, committed to offering the best customer experience, ensuring energy security, and accelerating a sustainable clean energy transition. Why? Because we’re New Brunswickers too, we care about our customers and future generations, and today we are actively looking for a new member to join us.

The Mactaquac Generating Station began generating electricity in 1968. Since the 1980s, concrete portions of the hydro station have been affected by a chemical reaction called alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR). The reaction causes the concrete to swell and crack and has required substantial annual maintenance and repairs. NB Power is proposing a project to ensure the station can operate to its intended 100-year lifespan with a modified approach to maintenance and adjusting and replacing equipment and concrete overtime.

The Quantity Surveyor plays a key role in the successful delivery of the Mactaquac Life Achievement Project (MLAP) by supporting Construction and Project Management teams with the review and validation of contractor payment submissions. This includes detailed assessment of monthly progress payment applications, quantity reconciliations, and adjustment event claims.

Operating within a cost-reimbursable contract model, this role is critical to ensuring timely, accurate, and fair compensation by auditing and verifying quantities of work delivered and installed. This is primarily a field-based position focused on desktop analysis and document review. Occasional site visits are required to visually confirm and perform basic measurements of civil, mechanical, and electrical works in progress or completed.

Key functions include

  • Review Contractor Progress Payment submittals - review contractor submissions monthly to validate claimed quantities for payment, with ongoing forecasting and progressive review throughout the reporting period. Conduct past submittal reviews as needed for quantity reconciliation and provide trend-based forecasts to Construction Management and Project Controls on future expenditures.
  • Field Verification of Claimed Quantities - review discipline specific contractor submissions to validate ordered, delivered, and installed quantities using vendor shop drawings, contractor surveys, as-built records and drawings, and other documentation. Conduct visual spot checks of the contractor’s work to verify as-built conditions in the field and inform desktop reviews.
  • Contractor Counter-part Coordination - meet regularly with contractor project controls and/or execution teams to discuss and collaboratively resolve discrepancies in claimed quantities, leading discussions to reach timely agreement.

Our ideal teammate will have

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical)

OR

  • A two-year Technical Diploma (Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology) Note: those with a diploma will require an additional two years of related work experience.
  • Six years of experience in hydroelectric generation or other heavy industry, with onsite construction management such as quantity verification, field inspections, reporting, forecasting and resolving discrepancies in a collaborative environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of quantity surveying processes including takeoffs, bid preparation, or any other relevant processes.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Class V driver’s license.
  • Understanding of all aspects of the hydro construction process would be considered an asset.

Note: If no candidates are identified who meet all of the above requirements, applicants with fewer years of experience may be considered.

Please note that during the initial phase of the project, positions will be based at Head Office. As the project advances, the primary work location will transition to the Mactaquac Generating Station.

An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be modified.

An Eligibility List generated from this competition may be used to fill future vacancies at the same level within a period of up to 12 months.
