The Role
Note this is a temporary position covering part-time hours for up to 10 months
The School Crossing Guard will assist and supervise school-age children with crossing roads in various locations of the municipality in a safe and professional manner.
Meet your department...
We keep Kingston moving safely and efficiently. Our team manages traffic signals and intersections, installs signage and pedestrian crossings, and responds to public safety concerns. We also analyze traffic data, implement calming measures, and develop policies that support active transportation and a connected, sustainable network.
What You'll Do...
Remain aware of traffic situations
Display crossing sign and use caution while guiding children and families safely across roadways
Ensure the safety of children crossing streets and intersections
Maintain a pleasant, courteous and helpful attitude toward children, their guardians and the general public
Model and reinforce proper behaviour and adherence to safety rules
Report dangerous driving, crossing practices or issues to the appropriate authorities
To qualify, you'll need...
Experience working with children and/or adolescents
Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector
Ability to make quick and accurate decisions while keeping in mind the safety of children
Good observation skills and the ability to interact with children and the general public in a positive manner
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, relaying information in a clear and concise manner with the ability to handle stressful situations
Must be available to work split shifts and be able to provide your own transportation
Able to perform the essential duties of the job including standing for long periods of time, outdoors and in all weather conditions
