Overview Of Role
WestJet Cargo is seeking an Advisor, Cargo Standards & Procedures to join our growing Cargo Operations team. This role is responsible for the development, governance, and continuous improvement of Cargo policies, procedures, and operational standards that support safe, compliant, and efficient operations across the network.
The successful candidate will be a collaborative and results-oriented professional with strong analytical, communication, and change management skills. As WestJet Cargo continues to grow and evolve, this position will play a critical role in supporting operational excellence, regulatory compliance, process standardization, and the successful implementation of strategic initiatives across the Cargo business.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and implement Cargo policies, procedures, standards, and operational documentation to support safe, complaint, and efficient operations across the Cargo network.
- Maintain a Cargo Standards and Procedures governance framework to ensure consistency, accountability, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement across the Cargo operation.
- Lead procedural change management activities, including impact assessments, stakeholder engagement, implementation planning, communication, and post-implementation reviews.
- Maintain document control processes, including version management, review schedules, approvals, publication, and archival of Cargo procedures and standards.
- Monitor regulatory, industry, and corporate policy changes and ensure timely incorporation into Cargo procedures, manuals, and operational documentation.
- Conduct periodic reviews of Cargo policies, procedures, and operational documentation, leveraging audit findings, safety reports, and operational trends to identify opportunities for standardization and continuous improvement.
- Support corrective and preventive action initiatives resulting from internal audits, IOSA audits, regulatory inspections, investigations, and operational reviews.
- Support Safety Management System (SMS) requirements through the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Cargo operational procedures.
- When operational requirements necessitate deviations from standard processes, collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop local procedures and participate in risk assessments in coordination with the Safety department.
- Coordinate with Safety, Security, and operational stakeholders to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate procedural controls and mitigations.
- Act as a liaison and represent Cargo Operations on cross-functional projects, committees, and working groups related to standards, procedures, training, safety, systems, and operational excellence.
- Develop and maintain operational bulletins, job aids, quick reference guides, forms, checklists, and support documentation to facilitate implementation of procedural changes.
- Work closely with Training Advisors to ensure procedural changes are accurately incorporated into training materials, programs, and delivery methods.
- Maintain and ensure the accuracy of Cargo network documentation and records, including Station Information Sheets, GHA trainer databases, user access records, station profiles, and other operational reference materials.
- Participate in user acceptance testing (UAT), business requirements development, and implementation activities for Cargo systems, technology enhancements, and process automation initiatives.
- Coordinate with Marketing and other business stakeholders to ensure Cargo website content and customer-facing information are accurate, current, and aligned with operational capabilities and procedures.
- Manage, monitor, and approve Cargo operational supplies, ensuring availability, standardization, cost effectiveness, and compliance with operational requirements.
- Develop and monitor key performance indicators related to procedural compliance, audit findings, document currency, and operational standardization.
- Benchmark Cargo procedures against industry best practices and emerging trends to support operational excellence and regulatory compliance.
- Participate in industry conferences, working groups, and external forums to remain informed of emerging trends, best practices, regulatory developments, and innovation within the air cargo industry.
Professional Qualifications And Education
- Minimum 3 years of air cargo operational experience.
- Proven experience in cargo operations supporting freighter, belly cargo, or a combination of both.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and effectively exchange ideas and information.
- Advanced analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written communication skills, including the ability to develop and maintain technical and procedural documentation.
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Knowledge of domestic, transborder, and international air cargo operations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a cross-functional environment.
- Experience participating in process improvement, change management, or procedural development initiatives is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Safety Management Systems (SMS), risk assessment methodologies, and operational risk management is considered an asset.
- Previous experience in a standards, procedures, quality assurance, training, safety, or regulatory compliance role is considered an asset.
- Frontline leadership or supervisory experience is considered an asset.
- Post-secondary education in Aviation, Logistics, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field is considered an asset.
- Bilingualism (English and French or English and Spanish) is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of IATA standards, cargo regulations, and air cargo security requirements is considered an asset.
