The Parkland School Division currently has a Permanent Full-time Maintenance Service Worker - SPECIALTY: PLUMBER position available at the Center for Education, in Stony Plain, Alberta.

FUNCTION & PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

As part of the Maintenance team, this position is under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor or Designate. This position includes the Maintenance Service Worker general duties in addition to the specialization role as a Plumber.

SPECIALTY PLUMBER

As a certified plumber, you will be responsible for installing, inspecting, and repairing plumbing fixtures, piping systems, and related equipment within school facilities with the primary goal of preventing system failures and ensuring safe, continuous water, drainage, and heating operations.

KEY PLUMBING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preventive Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections of systems such as backflow preventers, hot water tanks, boilers, and sump pumps to identify and resolve issues before they become emergencies.
  • Diagnostics & Repair: Troubleshoot plumbing issues (e.g., leaks, clogs, pipe bursts) and perform necessary repairs or part replacements using specialized hand and power tools.
  • System Installation: Measure, cut, thread, and assemble pipes, and install fixtures such as toilets, sinks, and showers.
  • Compliance: Adhere strictly to provincial building and plumbing codes to ensure all installations meet safety regulations.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate work logs, track materials used, and document routine maintenance for facility compliance.

GENERAL DUTIES - MAINTENANCE SERVICE WORKER

  • Conduct routine inspections of premises and equipment, including playground equipment, building exterior, interior, and landscape/parking lot.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on a variety of building systems.
  • Ability to diagnose problems, replace or repair parts on a variety of building systems, and adjust if necessary (e.g., ventilation).
  • Complete basic repairs and maintenance on building components and equipment.
  • Complete emergency/unscheduled repairs of equipment, structures, and grounds on the property.
  • Manage an inventory of equipment, tools, and machinery as assigned.
  • Ability to complete assigned work orders in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work for self and seek help when needed.
  • Move large quantities of furniture and equipment as assigned.
  • Install appliances and equipment.
  • Seasonal duties such as garden/yard maintenance, snow removal, etc.
  • Ability to go on call as per IUOE collective agreement.
  • Check the functionality of safety systems and be able to perform basic functions on said systems (e.g., fire alarm, security).
  • Collaborate and take the lead (when required) with co-workers and other professionals during renovations.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education

  • Journeyman Plumber/Gasfitter certification with a minimum of a Class B gasfitter certification; preference may be given to applicants with a Class A gasfitter licence.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 vehicle driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • Experience/training in refrigeration and air conditioning would be an asset.
  • Experience and knowledge of DDC and BMS Systems.
    • Preference will be given to applicants experienced with Siemens and Schneider BMS systems.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Google Docs, Email, and good computer skills is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The Plumber will be required to routinely lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Sometimes, heavier lifting may be required.
  • Ability to climb, crawl, crouch, lift, and move materials and equipment weighing more than 50 lbs with the use of proper equipment or teamwork.
  • Ability to climb stairs/ladders frequently to varying heights, and work on machinery, or in tight spaces.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work regularly.
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather.
  • Basic understanding of construction safe work practices and procedures.
  • Ability to identify hazards when assigned a particular task, detail the controls that must be put in place, and articulate the specific practices to be followed to minimize the possibility of accidents and injury.

POTENTIAL WORK ENVIRONMENT RISKS

  • Contact with infectious diseases.
  • Varying noise levels.
  • Dealing with uncooperative or difficult students.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Plumbers must agree to respect the confidentiality and personal integrity of students, parents, teachers, and other staff.
  • This position requires an original copy of a current clean criminal record check with vulnerable sector and an original copy of a child intervention record check.
  • This position is covered by the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local No. 955 Collective Agreement.

This position also requires an ability to work with demanding timelines, in a team-oriented environment.
