Camp Leader in Training (Youth Volunteer position)

Spray Lake Sawmills Centre (SLSC) is a leading-edge sport and recreational facility encompassing 325,000 square feet, including an aquatic centre, four arenas and a curling centre, fitness & climbing facilities, an indoor turf, track, and gymnasium, and is home to several third-party tenants. SLSC is a not-for-profit organization and a registered charity, governed by a volunteer board of directors.

About the Position

Are you looking to gain valuable leadership and team-building skills this summer? SLSC is recruiting youth volunteers to assist with our Summer Day Camp programs!

Leaders in Training (LITs) are an important part of our camp program – you will work closely with experienced Camp Staff to support a wide range of activities - sports, games, arts & crafts, outdoor adventures, and more. You'll help to create a safe, positive, and memorable experience for campers while building valuable leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. Bring your creativity, energy, and ideas - we encourage LITs to take initiative and contribute to daily activity planning. This is a hands-on opportunity to grow your confidence, gain experience in a recreational setting, and give back to your community.

Job Type: VOLUNTEER (unpaid), Seasonal (July-August)

Availability Required

  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 1 full camp week (full days Mon-Fri)
  • Our camps run: June 29 - Aug 28
  • Shifts are 8:45am-4:15pm, Monday-Friday for each camp week
  • 1-2 days of pre-camp training will be scheduled for successful candidates

Specific responsibilities

  • Foster a Positive Camp Environment: Help create a fun, safe, and inclusive space where all participants feel welcome and encouraged to learn and play.
  • Be a Positive Role Model: Build respectful, supportive relationships with campers and staff, demonstrating leadership, enthusiasm, and a caring attitude.
  • Engage Actively in Camp Activities: Participate enthusiastically in all aspects of the camp program, including swimming, sports, games, crafts, outdoor adventures.
  • Support Program Operations: Assist with setting up and taking down equipment and activity areas. Help ensure the smooth flow of daily schedules, including transitions between activities and meal/snack times.
  • Promote Camper Well-being and Safety: Provide supportive supervision, help maintain routines such as handwashing before and after meals, and ensure campers move safely between locations.
  • Assist Camp Leaders as Needed: Carry out additional duties as requested by the Camp Leaders to support the success of the program.

Qualifications

  • A natural ability to be playful and a genuine love for encouraging people of all ages to be active and have fun! And, the energy and enthusiasm to bring that passion to the camp every day.
  • Must be at least 13 years of age.
  • Previous experience in childcare or day camp setting is considered an asset.
  • A passion for fun, play, early childhood learning, sports, and wellness. Basic swimming skills are an asset.
  • Ability to provide a clear Criminal Record Check.
  • Commitment to a minimum number of volunteer hours (minimum 1 full camp week).
