Position Details

The University of Lethbridge is currently seeking applications for a Public Affairs Advisor. This is a full-time, in-person, continuing opposition on the Lethbridge campus.

A key team member in a network model, the Public Affairs Advisor reports to the Manager of Public Affairs in the Department of Communications, Marketing and Government Relations(CMGR). The Public Affairs Advisor’s role is to protect and enhance the University’s reputation and strengthen its brand through communication strategy development, content creation, media relations, website management, sharing ULethbridge news on social media and supporting crisis communications activities.

Guided by the directives of the ULethbridge Strategic Plan, the Public Affairs Advisor works on abroad scale with all members of the University community, telling the ULethbridge story through news releases, feature writing and event promotion. The Public Affairs Advisor will take the lead on developing an internal (employee) communication strategy, including producing a weekly campus newsletter designed to build a sense of community amongst faculty and staff. They will also develop content for institutional projects and initiatives, edit a wide range of marcom materials, support Convocation with citation writing and continually update both internal and external facing web pages.

Salary Range

Starting Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE): $57,724.36 to $72,617.15 annually

Full Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE): $57,724.36 to $87,509.94 annually (APO – Grade 2)

The University of Lethbridge is undertaking a job classification and compensation review for Administrative Professional Officer (APO) positions. As such, the salary range currently assigned for this position may be adjusted as a result of this project.

Position Qualifications Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field

Five to seven years of related communications experience

Job Specific Knowledge and Technical Skills

  • Superior ability to write news releases and media advisories
  • Ability to translate complicated academic material for general audiences
  • Skilled in media relations, pitching stories, coordinating interviews and crafting media strategies
  • Excellent writing, editing and communications skills; including editorial/feature writing and writing for the web as well as Canadian Press writing standards
  • Social media expertise
  • High level of computer literacy, including MS Office, Sharepoint, Teams, Zoom, Campaign Monitor (or other e-newsletter programs), Adobe Photoshop; updating content in a Drupal environment; and familiarity with content management systems
  • Basic photography and videography skills
  • Crisis communications experience
  • Knowledge of undergraduate and graduate programming and research at the University of Lethbridge an asset

Some evening/weekend work and travel will be required
