About the Client
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an 85-year-old woman in Newmarket who recently returned home from the hospital following treatment for anemia and a medical procedure. She uses a walker or wheelchair for mobility and experiences memory challenges that benefit from gentle prompts and redirection. While she has good days where she's engaged and social, she also has difficult days where she needs more support and rest. She's motivated to regain strength and independence, including walking and managing personal care on her own again. Her husband, also 85, is her primary caregiver and manages medications, diabetes care, and household tasks, but needs reliable support to ensure his wife receives consistent care each morning.
Responsibilities
- Provide morning care support to help start each day positively, including assistance with getting ready, mobility support, and personal care as needed
- Offer companionship and cognitive engagement through conversation, games, and activities on good days
- Provide comfort and presence during difficult days when the client is resting
- Light housekeeping tasks such as tidying and meal prep when appropriate, particularly when the client is sleeping
- Monitor and communicate any changes in condition or needs
- Work collaboratively with the family and other healthcare providers involved in her care
What We're Looking For
- Experience supporting clients with mobility aids (walker/wheelchair)
- Memory care experience with ability to provide gentle prompts and redirection
- Patient, calm demeanor with understanding that care needs fluctuate day-to-day
- Reliability and consistency - the family values building trust with the same caregiver
- English-speaking
- Flexibility to adapt care approach based on daily needs
- Initiative to assist with light household tasks when appropriate
- Strong communication skills with both the client and family members
Schedule
Seven mornings per week, two hours per visit. The family anticipates care needs may evolve as the client's strength improves, potentially transitioning from morning personal care support to more daytime companionship and activity-based care in the coming weeks. Flexibility and willingness to adjust schedule timing as needs change is important.
