Stern Laboratories Inc. is a privately owned Canadian corporation which conducts full scale thermal/ hydraulic experiments for code development and validation, Critical Heat Flux determination, emergency cooling, equipment qualification and reliability and safety, under contract to utilities, reactor, nuclear fuel and instrument vendors, other laboratories and government agencies.
We construct and operate test facilities which are representative of Nuclear Power Reactor systems and components, and are equipped with instrumentation for determination of the heat transfer crisis in simulated nuclear fuel assemblies, and measurements of differential and absolute pressures, single and two phase flows, void fractions etc. We perform safety experiments involving loss of flow and pressure, loss of coolant, pressure tube and related pipe failures, aerosol transport in and from defective containments etc.
Working in an engineering environment with other experienced Technicians, Technologists and Professional Engineers to participate in the design, construction and assembly of complex experimental devices and facilities to simulate reactor heat transport systems, safety systems, fuel and fuel channel components. Some daily responsibilities could include but are not limited to the following:
- Incoming material inspections and report writing
- Fuel Simulator fabrication and assembly
- Project assembly and teardown as per procedures, schematics etc.
- Machining of parts, modifications etc.
- Installation and routing of piping and pressure fittings for loop systems.
- Overall general laboratory maintenance
Qualifications
Education
- College level - Mechanical Engineering Technologist/ Technician
Skills
- Basic understanding of thermal dynamics, heat transfer and fluid flow.
- Basic machine shop experience (Manual lathe, milling machine, drill press etc.)
- Use of basic hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of inspection instruments and metering equipment.
- Read and understand fabrication procedures, technical specifications, quality plans, assembly documents and drawings.
- Job task planning, organizing and problem solving.
- Work as a team, decision making, ability to find information and use of a computer.
- Ensure safety, quality and accuracy of results.
