Join a dynamic team at the intersection of strategy, leadership, and public engagement. As the Government Relations Officer, you will play a pivotal role in advancing the University’s government relations priorities while serving as a trusted partner to the Director, Government Relations.

In this high-impact position, you will provide confidential, executive-level administrative and operational support in a fast-paced and politically sensitive environment. You will help drive meaningful engagement with municipal, provincial, and federal stakeholders by coordinating key initiatives, managing sensitive communications, and ensuring seamless execution of executive activities and strategic priorities.

Success in this role requires strong judgment, discretion, and initiative. You will be a key connector behind the scenes—supporting briefings, facilitating stakeholder relationships, and helping shape interactions that strengthen the University’s presence and influence across all levels of government.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will help drive and support the University’s government relations priorities by coordinating key activities, managing strategic initiatives, and building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You will:

  • Provide high-level support to the Director through calendar and priority management, meeting coordination, travel planning, and executive administration
  • Coordinate engagement activities with government officials, ministries, agencies, and sector partners, including meetings, events, and visits
  • Prepare and support the development of briefing notes, presentations, reports, speaking points, and other communications materials
  • Research and monitor government developments, emerging issues, and policy trends to support advocacy and decision-making efforts
  • Manage confidential information and provide responsive support on sensitive matters and emerging priorities
  • Act as a key liaison between Government Relations and internal and external stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and coordination
  • Support strategic projects and operational activities by maintaining tracking systems, monitoring progress, and identifying opportunities to improve processes and efficiency

What You’ll Bring to this Position

  • Post-secondary degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field
  • A minimum 5–7 years of progressively responsible administrative experience, preferably in a government relations, public affairs, or executive office environment
  • A relevant combination of education and experience may be considered

Skills That Will Ensure Your Success in the Role:

  • Experience supporting senior leadership in complex, fast-paced organizations
  • Experience in the post-secondary or public sector environment is an asset
  • Strong understanding of government structures and policy environments in Canada (municipal, provincial, federal)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing professional documents and briefing materials
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • High level of political acuity, judgment, and discretion
  • A demonstrated ability to support senior level executives and to work effectively with confidential and sensitive information
  • Executive-level project management expertise
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with collaboration and document management tools
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • The impact of error is high as the position is responsible to ensure day-to-day work is completed accurately, and information provided to others (both external and internal to the University) is correct.
  • Considerable discretion is required as the position is privy to and works with sensitive, highly confidential information.
  • Establishing and maintaining the level of professional relationships that support exceptional collaboration and problem solving is essential for success in this position.
  • Occasional requirement to support activities outside regular business hours.
