Duties and Responsibilities
The Library Assistant provides public service support across reference, circulation, and government documents services. The main duties of the Library Assistant include delivering reference services in person, by appointment; assessing information needs; supporting use of library resources; and referring users to academic librarians as needed. In collaboration with the Reference Librarian, the Library Assistant helps improve services and develops supporting materials.
This role includes working Circulation desk shifts, assisting with loans, returns, renewals, holds, patron registration, and fine payments, and supporting the use of equipment and the university website. The Library Assistant also contributes to process improvements with the Circulation Supervisor. Additionally, supports access to municipal, provincial, and federal government documents as needed and works with the Collection Management Librarian to provide data for collection decisions.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Must have a 3 – 4 years’ post-secondary degree with demonstrated experience and knowledge in bibliographic research or a related field, along with one year of related academic library experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong research and critical thinking skills, experience using databases and library systems, and proficiency in computer applications, including library systems and Microsoft Office. Familiarity with government information sources and public service equipment is an asset. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, along with strong customer service orientation, attention to detail, and the ability to work with limited supervision, are essential.
*NOTE*
Skill based testing may be required. This is a full-time term position to December 23, 2026. This role may be required to work evening and weekend shifts as needed.
