Job Duties

The Instructional Designer is an integral part of a collaborative development team responsible for creating innovative and engaging learning experiences using suitable educational technologies and instructional design strategies. This vital role involves designing, developing, implementing and evaluating courses, leveraging established and emerging learning technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), spatial learning (augmented and virtual realities), game-based learning, and open educational resources. The ideal candidate works effectively in a team consisting of subject matter and technical experts to collaboratively develop courses and ensure the delivery of high-quality educational content that meets the needs of diverse learners.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE

Specific Accountabilities 1.

Course Design: Work with various Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to effectively blueprint and design instructional content, ensuring alignment with learning objectives and pedagogical best practices, while coordinating with other Learning Technology teams for technical development of courses.

2.

Technology Integration: Research and recommend the integration of emerging technologies into instructional design processes in alignment with Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Strategic Plan and the Learning and Teaching Division’s Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) Plan.

3.

Professional Development: Stay current with trends and best practices in instructional design and educational technologies to support Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Strategic Plan and TEL Plan.

4.

Needs Assessment: Conduct learner and content needs assessment in collaboration with SMEs to inform effective course design and revisions.

5.

Authentic Assessment: Guide the development of authentic assessments in collaboration with SMEs to ensure appropriate and meaningful evaluation of student learning.

6.

Accessibility and Inclusivity: Create accessible, and inclusive learning experiences using universal design for learning (UDL) principles and Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Quality Standards for Online Courses.

7.

Project Management: Independently manage the lifecycle of assigned course design projects, effectively balancing multiple priorities, timelines, and stakeholder expectations to ensure successful completion.

8.

Open Education Resources: Support the use of open educational resources in e-learning.

9.

Faculty Consultation: Provide instructional design consultation to faculty, recommending evidence-based practices and strategies for learner-centred course design.

10.

Feedback Incorporation: Gather and analyze feedback from faculty and learners to iteratively improve course design quality and effectiveness.

11.

Collaboration: Actively engage Learning Technologies staff and distributed development teams.

12. Perform related duties to instructional design and educational technologies.

13. Be prepared to travel as part of the role.

Duties

Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities (QSA) 1.

Education: A

Master’s degree specializing in Instructional Design, Educational Technologies, or a related field.

2.

Experience: Minimum 2 years of practical experience working as an Instructional Designer developing interactive technology-rich courses at the post-secondary level with SMEs and technical teams that meet relevant provincial, federal and international standards such as WCAG.

3.

Technical Proficiency: Proficient using learning management systems and generative AI tools. Demonstrated experience incorporating emerging technologies, such as AR, VR and 3D technologies, into the course design process to enhance learner engagement and instructional effectiveness.

4.

Adult Learning Theories: Advanced understanding of adult learning theories and instructional design models.

5.

Emerging Technologies: Stay current with trends in educational technologies and make informed recommendations for their integration in course design.

6.

Creativity: Proven ability to think creatively and develop innovative and effective instructional solutions.

7.

Collaboration and Autonomy: Ability to work responsibly, demonstrating initiative as part of a collaborative academic and technical team.

8.

Organization Skills: Strong project management and organizational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
