Position Title
MLA Laboratory Technologist
Position Summary
Red Deer Polytechnic is seeking a detail‑oriented and safety‑focused MLA Laboratory Technologist to support the delivery of high‑quality Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) training. The role exists to ensure the accurate, safe, and efficient preparation, maintenance, and support of instructional laboratory environments for MLA training, directly contributing to the development of competent future laboratory professionals.
Position Responsibilities
- Prepare reagents, blood simulants, specimens, and equipment for MLA instructional labs.
- Set up, test, calibrate, and troubleshoot microscopes, centrifuges, analyzers, and related instruments.
- Maintain inventory, order consumables, and track expiry dates for perishable materials.
- Ensure compliance with WHMIS, biosafety, GLP, and OH&S standards; maintain SDS and SOP documentation.
- Conduct routine safety checks (eyewash, PPE, sharps, first aid).
- Provide technical support to instructors and assist during practical assessments.
- Support RDP events such as open houses and demonstrations.
- Daily exposure to chemicals and controlled biologics.
- Physical activity including standing, lifting (up to ~15–22 kg), and equipment movement.
- Occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekend work for lab setups, events, or equipment emergencies.
- No travel required.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of a two‑year post‑secondary training in Medical Laboratory Assistant, Medical Laboratory Technology, or Biological Sciences.
- 2 – 3 years of experience in clinical or educational laboratory settings.
- Standard First Aid (CSA Intermediate) with CPR‑C & AED, WHMIS, and Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Experience with specimen processing, diagnostic testing, and laboratory equipment maintenance.
- Knowledge of hematology, urinalysis, microbiology, and biosafety protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong time‑management and multitasking abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to work independently within established procedures.
- Strong communication skills and adaptability.

$29.52 to $34.53 hourly
Benefits and Compensation Information
An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits
