Library Assistant, Circulation (Casual)

Cape Breton University is currently accepting applications for a casual role as a Library Assistant, Circulation within the Department of Library and Culture Resources .

The CBU Library is the primary academic information and research resource for Cape Breton University. The Library promotes learning, supports teaching, and enhances scholarly research, and creative activities by building collections and providing expert services and innovative access to information. The successful candidate will provide public service at the Circulation Desk. Shifts will consist of primarily evening and weekend shifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide circulation services to all library patrons including registering patrons, checking materials in/ out, collect fines, place holds, assist with space/equipment bookings, etc.
  • Assist patrons printing/scanning/photocopying;
  • Check patron blocks and suspensions;
  • Responsible for receiving cash and debit/credit payments;
  • Assist patrons with Reserves and Serials databases;
  • Evaluate questions that should be referred to the Reference Librarian;
  • Add conversion on the fly books to database;
  • Respond to questions and may provide guidance to student shelvers;
  • Perform opening and closing procedures for the Library;
  • Check security violations and maintain log at Circulation Desk;
  • Maintain confidentiality around student records;
  • Other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Three years of work experience in position involving public service. Library experience an asset.
  • Working knowledge of searchable databases, web-based tools, spreadsheets, email.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately with attention to detail, usually under pressure, with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and supervisory staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of library automated system (Alma, Integrated Library System) would be an asset.
