Board of Directors – Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport Municipal Services Corporation
The City of Sarnia is seeking four to six members of the public to serve as voting Directors on the MSC Board of Directors. As a Board Director, you will help shape the future of YZR and contribute to the governance of this important regional transportation and economic asset.
The Board of Directors is “skills-based” and will be comprised of individuals who bring the mix of skills, expertise, and perspective needed to oversee the responsible, progressive operation of the airport while serving the unique and diverse needs of the people and businesses of Sarnia and Lambton County.
About the Municipal Services Corporation
The City of Sarnia is establishing a Municipal Services Corporation (“MSC”) to govern and operate the Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport (“YZR”). The MSC is being incorporated under the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010 (ONCA) and will assume full operational responsibility for YZR upon the expiration of the current headlease agreement on June 30, 2027.
The MSC’s primary mandate is to oversee the safe operation of the airport, ensure its long-term financial sustainability, promote growth, and increase its overall economic impact for Sarnia and Lambton County.
Priority Qualifications
Finance
Familiarity with budgeting, financial reporting, or auditing
Aviation or Transportation
Understanding of airport or transportation operations, regulatory issues, or infrastructure management
Legal/Regulatory Knowledge
Familiarity with the Aeronautics Act, municipal legislation, and public-sector governance
Real Estate Development
Familiarity with commercial and industrial real estate trends, opportunities, and development dynamics within Sarnia and Lambton County
Business Operations and Investments
Experience with business development, strategic planning, or investment management
A professional Director designation (such as ICD.D or equivalent), senior leadership experience, and a connection to the Sarnia–Lambton region are highly desired attributes for Board members.
Board Responsibilities
Directors will be responsible for the stewardship of the Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport and for providing strategic direction, financial oversight, governance, risk management, and stakeholder engagement on behalf of the MSC. Directors may also serve on standing committees of the Board, including finance and audit, governance and nominations, operations and safety, and business development.
Terms and Commitment
Board members will be appointed for three-year terms, with terms staggered to ensure operational continuity. Each Board member will have the option for one reappointment, not to exceed six consecutive years of service.
