The Solid Waste Operations Branch is a branch within the Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability Department. This branch is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's Landfill site, which includes non-hazardous solid waste disposal, household hazardous waste receiving and disposal, leaf and yard waste disposal and composting, and solid waste collection and disposal. Responsibilities also include the operation of the scalehouse, which is the first point of contact for customers and waste entering the landfill site.

The Waste Collections Services Section is responsible for waste collection services and related programs in the City of Barrie including the curbside collection of all waste related materials, multi residential collection services, and various waste collection and management initiatives.

The successful applicant to this position will assist the Solid Waste Operations Branch, Waste Collections Section with performing the following tasks:

  • Assist with waste audits.
  • Assist with Educational Outreach Events related to responsible waste management practices
  • Conduct research and update waste related data.
  • Conduct inspections and collects data on public space waste bins.
  • Reconcile material type data and reports provided by the curbside collection contract service provider with City of Barrie data.
  • Respond, document, and report on issues relating to improper waste disposal and collection contract issues.
  • Assist with Multi-Residential waste management programs, including the Organics Program and Front End Garbage Program, which may include lobby display setup and operation, bin deliveries, and the collection and analysis of program performance data.
  • Manage inventory of promotional and educational supplies as well as onsite waste and recycling containers.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Currently enrolled in a recognized College or University Co-op program

Experience

  • No minimum experience required

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Self-motivated and work well with a variety of people
  • Comfortable working in a high paced and dynamic working environment
  • Dependable, reliable and works well with little supervision
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Responsible and professional
  • Computer skills – MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams

Conditions of Employment

  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s Licence in good standing, access to a reliable vehicle
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*

Hours: The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement

Wage: $20.04 to $27.30 per hour
