Are you an experienced communications professional looking for new challenges and creative opportunities? Join the Communications Department at the City of Kelowna, where you will support City-led projects and programs that deliver services to citizens and advance our community vision. We are currently looking for a Communications Advisor with strong expertise in digital communications or media relations to join our Marketing, Digital Communications and Media team for the next year.

A Communications Advisor leads communication, marketing and media plans on projects that advance the City’s strategic priorities. You will engage your strong writing, research and interpersonal skills to develop and implement digital communication plans, proactive media strategies and public awareness campaigns. As a creative communicator with both tactical and strategic experience, you can move seamlessly from defining goals, to analyzing data, to analyzing audiences and risks, to creating the in-market collateral for a variety of channels. Flexibility to balance priorities and multiple projects is critical, as you will have multiple business partners you support in your portfolio.

A Communications Advisor develops and implements communications strategies corporately for a City department.

Duties - Union

  • Promotes department initiatives/events and develops branding.
  • Develops and oversees all communications standards to ensure they reflect corporate policies.
  • Develops annual communications strategies and collateral.
  • Develops research tools and strategies to ensure all communications is targeted and results- oriented. Evaluates effectiveness.
  • Develops and implements performance measures to ensure communications strategies are effective.
  • Develops web strategy that reflects corporate policies and City standards; will be responsible for content and design on web home pages, but not specific pages on kelowna.ca.
  • Coordinates and maximizes all media relations with Supervisor, including news releases and media events.
  • Coordinates Mayor & Council attendance at departmental events. This may involve preparing backgrounders and speaking notes.
  • Responsible for coordinating public consultation or communication required for new or existing facilities or events.
  • Will work closely with client to prioritize work.

Credentials - Union

  • Communications Degree
  • 4 years experience that includes strategic and collaborative communications projects, media relations, issues management and social media
  • Experience with web content management, design software and digital engagement tools will be preferred

Pay Rate

Starts at $47.46 per hour with a 2-step progression to $50.49 per hour plus 14% in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits
