Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for the temporary, full-time position for a Custodian in the Facility Maintenance & Operations division of Property, Fleet & Environment with the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).

The Custodian position performs cleaning and minor maintenance functions to an assigned building. The cleaning functions would consist of sweeping, wet/dry mopping, dusting, vacuuming, cleaning/sanitizing washrooms, stripping, waxing and polishing floors, shampooing carpets, washing walls/windows/fixtures, and other related duties. This position encompasses a wide variety of general labour duties in various locations indoors and outdoors in various working conditions. This position requires teamwork, flexibility, organizational skills and safety awareness
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for the safe operation of cleaning equipment.
- Contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRM.
- Preparation of work-related reports.
- Communicate with the general public on a regular basis related to duties performed.
- Manage time, priorities and work in pressure situations with multiple deadlines.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Grade 12 is required.
- 2 years previous related experience in cleaning methods, solutions, equipment, and procedures used in the care of large buildings.
- WHMIS, CPR/First Aid certification, or ability to successfully complete.
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities
- Must follow Safe Work Practices.
- Ability to read and interpret policies, procedural manuals, MSDS sheets, operation and service manuals and other work-related documents.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Proven ability to work as a team.
- Must have good oral and written communication skills.
- Must work well with minimal supervision.
Security Clearance Requirements
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.
Candidates must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position and have valid licensing, as required.

HOURS OF WORK: Thursday-Monday, 8:00am - 4:00pm
SALARY: $27.70 per hour as per the CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement
WORK LOCATION: Captain William Spry Community Centre – 16 Sussex St, Halifax
