Overview Of Role
The student will engage in an exciting relationship with an appointed mentor and will work with the larger team to enable business growth and agility by providing a secure environment for WestJet users and Technology. Specific areas of learning will cover Data Science. Application of industry leading Data Science practices, and techniques to develop well-rounded foundational knowledge. There will be extensive opportunity to analyze and report on key Technology metrics and provide recommendations for improvement in the various Technology programs and forums.
This role will align with an energetic self-starter who has a strong work ethic and willingness to learn. Our business is continually evolving, so the successful student must exhibit a high standard of excellence, enjoy challenges and be results driven.
Note: This is a 12-month term commencing on August 31, 2026
Key Deliverables Include
- Analyze large, complex datasets to identify trends, patterns and business opportunities that support operational and commercial decision-making.
- Develop, validate, and evaluate machine learning, statistical and AI models under the guidance of more experienced data scientists.
- Build reusable analytical data products to support predictive and prescriptive analytics initiatives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business problems and translate them into analytical solutions and experiments.
- Create dashboards and presentations that communicate insights and model performance to technical and business stakeholders.
- Support experimentation, model monitoring and continuous improvement by measuring business outcomes and recommending enhancements.
- Apply data science best practices, documentation standards and responsible AI principles while contributing to a collaborative and innovative team environment.
Experience And Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work with structured and unstructured data.
- Working knowledge of SQL and Python and experience querying relational databases.
- Familiarity with machine learning concepts such as regression, classification, clustering, forecasting, and model evaluation.
- Experience using data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau is an asset.
- Understanding of cloud analytics platforms (Azure, Snowflake, Databricks or similar) is considered an asset.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Demonstrates professionalism, sound judgment, and respect for confidentiality when working with sensitive data.
