Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on environmental engineering or a related field is required.

EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience working in a laboratory setting is required.
  • Previous experience collecting, preparing and analyzing environmental samples is required.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Basic understanding of laboratory procedures and safe handling of samples and equipment is required.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and standardized testing procedures accurately is required.
  • Strong attention to detail when collecting samples, recording data, and performing tests is required.
  • Good problem-solving skills to help identify issues and support troubleshooting in experiments are required.
  • Ability to interpret data and recognize trends or changes in results is required.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and manage multiple tasks are required.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and sharing results are required.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team is required.
  • Time management skills to complete tasks and testing within required timelines are required.
  • Commitment to following safety rules and maintaining a safe work environment is required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Key responsibilities

  • Help set up and run laboratory and pilot systems used to test wastewater treatment processes.
  • Collect and prepare samples (such as wastewater and sludge) and carry out testing using established procedures.
  • Perform regular tests to measure important water quality factors like oxygen levels, nutrients, and solids.
  • Review and summarize results to understand how well treatment systems are working.
  • Support research projects focused on improving wastewater treatment and environmental sustainability.
  • Keep accurate records of tests, results, and equipment checks.
  • Prepare basic reports, updates, and summaries of findings.
  • Follow all laboratory safety procedures, biosafety requirements, WHMIS guidelines, and institutional health and safety regulations
  • Other duties as assigned.
