Rail Engineering Specialist (Contract)
Calgary, AB (office-based with periodic site travel)
We’re recruiting on behalf of a leading oil & gas client seeking a Rail Engineering Specialist (SME) to support both major capital projects and existing operations.
This is a high-impact role where you’ll provide technical leadership across rail design, engineering standards, and operational integration. You’ll act as the primary subject matter expert ensuring rail systems are safe, compliant, practical, and aligned with operational requirements—without unnecessary complexity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide SME input across Pre-FEED and FEED project phases
- Lead and review design for rail yard layouts, rail racks, track, and switches/turnouts
- Ensure integration between engineering design and operational needs
- Support railway approvals and coordination with Class I railways (CN/CP)
- Review engineering deliverables and guide external service providers
- Develop and maintain rail standards, specifications, and best practices
- Support operations through optimization initiatives and Management of Change (MOC) processes
- Identify risks and ensure solutions are fit-for-purpose and cost-effective
Qualifications:
- 5+ years’ experience in rail infrastructure, design, or industrial rail systems
- Strong expertise in track design, turnouts, and yard/terminal layouts
- Experience working with railway standards and approval processes
- Background in oil & gas, midstream, or bulk handling environments preferred
- P.Eng. designation considered an asset
