Purpose
- To use historical performance, industry best practice prediction tools and analysis as well as instrumentationto advise technical team on geotechnical risk mitigation measures for development and longhole stoping.
- To educate the operations workforce in geotechnical risk identification.
- To improve communication of geotechnical-related items through clear and concise engineering prints,meaningful contributions to meetings and positive collaborations with the workforce.
- To direct reports in the engineering group through performance review, training, guidance, and mentoring toreach their maximum potential.
- To provide more robust technical input to the mine planning process
Responsibilities
- Be familiar with the site Ground Control Management Plan and ensure that Mine Operations are adhering to the guidance and requirements outlined in it.
- Perform inspections of the pit, waste dump facilities, and surface geotechnical infrastructures as well as utilize information provided by the instrumentation systems (Radar, Robotic Total Station, Volumetric Wire Piezometer, Extensometers, Sloughmeters, etc.) to proactively assess ground control risk and ensure ground support systems are adequate to mitigate geotechnical risk to workers.
- Contribute to the mine planning process by conducting analysis and providing recommendations pertaining to slope stability by using numerical modeling techniques (Rocscience suites, Deswik CAD, etc.) and empirical design charts to predict mine performance.
- Perform quality control audits of pit and waste dump designs to ensure compliance to long-term mine plan and investigate improvement in geotechnical guidance through analysis of historical data.
- Review mine plans to ensure alignment to geotechnical guidance in all planning cycles, i.e., short, medium, and long-term planning
- Reconcile actual volumetric slope stability performance with predicted and/or modeled performance. Use the information to refine site-specific stability predictions.
- Address geotechnical issues documented in the ground control logbook as appropriate.
- Review of other engineering prints to ensure geotechnical risk/hazards are identified and ground support/strategy outlined is appropriate for the local ground conditions.
- Design rehabilitation programs using Deswik, outlining site specific ground support installations.
- Participate in planning meetings and pre-site inspections to provide geotechnical input; specifically advise on geotechnical risk considerations and mitigation measures.
- Assist in providing geotechnical hazard identification training to workforce.
- Support communication initiatives to inform the workforce of geotechnical activities.
- Participate in other geotechnical-related tasks outlined by the Geotechnical Superintendent.
Training and Education
- Bachelor of Science in Mining or Geotechnical Engineering or equivalent
- Be a registered Professional Engineer in a Canadian jurisdiction.
- Have a minimum of 5 years working in rock mechanics or at an underground mining operation.
- Have previous experience in a supervisory role.
- Familiarity with Deswik, Map3D, RS2 and Unwedge would be considered an asset
