The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the Atlantic Veterinary College requires Kennel/Barn Assistants to work on a casual, as needed, basis to support the Small Animal (SA) and/or Large Animal (LA) Hospitals during peak times/busy periods (may include weekdays, weekends, evenings, overnights, statutory holidays , and UPEI closures) and to replace staff vacations and/or temporary leaves, as required.
The Kennel/Barn Assistants play an important role supporting Animal Care Attendants, Technical and Clinical staff with responsibilities including cleaning and disinfection, basic animal husbandry and restocking various hospital areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under supervision, job responsibilities will include:
- Basic cleaning and disinfection of equipment and animal holding areas, following infection control guidelines
- Assist with the restocking of laundry, food, and consumables
- Preparation of kennels for patients
- Provide feeding and follow feeding instructions
- Provide assistance with the safe handling and restraint of small animal patients
- Provide assistance to Animal Care Attendants (ACAs), Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) and Clinicians for routine and emergency examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments
- Assist with the daily care and husbandry of hospitalized patients within a primary care, referral, and emergency setting
- Work as required with equipment and maintain high standards of cleanliness
- Liaise with ACAs, RVTs, Clinicians and clients, where required
- Maintain the highest standards of professionalism in all interactions and communication, including respecting patient/client confidentiality
QUALIFICATIONS
- A graduate of Grade 12 or an accepted equivalent
- 6 months’ experience in the safe handling and care of small and/or large animals in a clinical setting would be an asset.
- Veterinary Assistant Certification considered an asset
- Certification in fear free/low-stress animal handling or RECOVER would be considered an asset
- Must be prepared to work a rotating schedule of days/evenings/overnights, including weekends, some statutory holidays and UPEI closures
- Must have basic competency to input data in computer systems and spreadsheets
- Must have ability to lift weights up to 25kg
- Must be self-motivated with a strong work ethic and reliable
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Must be able to work independently, but also as part of a team
