Family Law Clerk

Martin & Hillyer Associates, one of Ontario's pre-eminent law firms located in Burlington for over 50 years, has an opening for a Family Law Clerk. The successful applicant must have a minimum of five (5) years experience working in a family law setting.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Drafting, preparing, and reviewing legal documents, including pleadings, domestic contracts, affidavits, briefs, financial statements, draft orders, etc.
  • Client intake and paperless file management.
  • Coordinating court filings in compliance with the Family Law Rules and all practice directions.
  • Liaising and maintaining professional relationships with clients, opposing counsel, and court staff.
  • Scheduling and managing calendar obligations, including meetings, court dates, and deadlines.
  • Legal research.
  • Administrative duties, including docketing time, processing accounts, intake of client payments, opening and closing files, etc.
  • Occasional reception coverage.

The successful candidate will be a confident, detail-oriented professional with:

  • A Law Clerk Diploma and a minimum of five (5) years of recent experience in a family law setting.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Family Law Rules and familiarity with Ontario’s Family Law Act, the Divorce Act, and other essential family law legislation.
  • Solid understanding of court procedures and family law practice, and experience dealing directly with clients and legal professionals.
  • Effective writing skills with keen attention to grammar and spelling.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
  • The ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams), Adobe, DivorceMate, and Case Center.
  • Familiarity with LEAP software preferred.
  • A collaborative attitude and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Job Type

Full-time, permanent; hybrid schedule available (1-2 days remote each week)
