Purpose of your Position - Non Union

The Kelowna Community Theatre is owned and operated by the City of Kelowna with a mandate to enrich the artistic and cultural life of the community. In order to fulfill the Theatre mandate and position the Kelowna Community Theatre as a professional venue which provides a high standard of service and is financially viable in a competitive environment, the Theatre Manager must create and maintain strong working relationships with local and touring artists and organizations, a variety of industry professionals, audiences and the general public. The Theatre Manager is responsible for all aspects of facility operations including facility and equipment maintenance and operations, customer service, rentals management and marketing.

Facility Operations

  • Ensure that the theatre facility and equipment is maintained to industry and safety standards.
  • Develop and manage policies and procedures with respect to that facility operations that impact staff, contractors and volunteers working in the theatre therefore, ensuring that the Theatre is a safe and professionally managed environment for patrons, performers, staff, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Manage the Front of House operations including the Box Office, Concession Services and Volunteer Program.

Rentals

  • Acquire, document, and manage rental bookings for the Theatre’s rentable spaces in accordance with the appropriate policies and procedures. This includes creation of rental contracts, invoicing for rentals, processing of payments for rentals, troubleshooting issues and communications with rental clients.
  • Ensure all staff, volunteers and renters conform to municipal, provincial, and federal laws and policies, including compliance with the Liquor Control & Licensing Act and the theatre’s Liquor Primary License.
  • In collaboration with the Division, regularly review and update theatre fees and charges.
  • Create and implement a data-driven outcome-based process to regularly evaluate program offerings and theatre services and make appropriate changes to improve those offerings to the community.

Marketing

  • Maintain theatre-owned promotional channels, including electronic reader sign, web and social media presence, exterior and interior signage, and internal or external screen-based media.
  • Lead the development and implementation of marketing initiatives for promotion of the theatre and box office, in collaboration with the City’s Communications Department and in a manner consistent with corporate branding objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Assist renters with event-specific marketing strategies to maximize attendance at each event.
  • Conduct or commission research into audience trends, demographics and psychographics and make appropriate changes to marketing initiatives.

Financial Operations

  • In collaboration with the Cultural Services Manager, establish and manage an annual operating budget of approximately.
  • $1.16M for the theatre and advise on capital budget planning.
  • Ensure that budget management is consistent with corporate best practices and prudent financial administration.
  • Seek opportunities to capitalize on revenue generation while improving efficiencies.
  • Create and process financial documents and reports.

Human Resources

  • 5 full time, 8-11 part-time/casual/relief
  • Hire, assess, discipline, develop, inspire, and reward employees.

Credentials - Union

Knowledge - Non Union

Post-secondary Diploma or Degree in theatre or event management, business, marketing or equivalent training, plus 5 years of experience in performance venue management.

Skills & Abilities - Non Union

Strong verbal and written communication skills, including experience with preparation of formal reports and grant applications. Ability to negotiate effectively. Tact and diplomacy in dealing with clients and the public. Training and experience with theatre booking, ticketing and POS systems.

The annual salary for this position ranges from $97,550 to $113,800, depending on qualifications and experience. Most candidates can expect to start in the lower to mid-range of this scale, with opportunities for salary growth based on performance and tenure.
