Position Summary
Maximizes customer value by enhancing existing formulas and understanding supply chain inputs to ensure we have a reliable and repeatable product through its entire life cycle. The Formulator will own a portfolio of raw materials and provide technical support for the materials across all our dosage forms. Works with key business partners to identify innovative solutions to existing problems and discover future opportunities related to value engineering and reliability improvements. Understands raw ingredient specifications and impact on the finished product and can design experiments at the bench-top level and correlate them to full-scale production by using data.
Responsibilities
- Manages commercialized formulations for a specified portfolio of products, which includes a variety of dosage and delivery forms
- Runs and monitors bench top, pilot, manufacturing scale-up, and verification batches. Provides technical and scientific input, support, and assistance to other technical disciplines.
- Supports technology transfer activities; guides product and process development activities, working closely with Strategic Sourcing, Analytical Research Services, Quality Control, Quality Standards, and Plant Operations team to deliver successful processes for production of supplements into the commercial environment. Leads the technical transfer process related to sending existing products outside or bringing existing products in-house.
- Works closely with key business partners to find synergies related to maximizing customer value and enhancing margins through formulation improvements and alternate raw materials
- Leverages data to draw insights, identify risks, and demonstrates perseverance to turn opportunities into complete solutions.
- Develops and refines raw material specifications to support bulk reliability and supply chain objectives related to simplification
- Identifies and qualifies alternate raw materials and leads efforts related to Business Continuity Planning (BCP) as it relates to raw and bulk risk mitigation.
- Perform root-cause analysis on assay failures and repeated physical rejects, and implement appropriate Corrective Actions/Preventive Actions (CAPA) as required. Create and execute experimental design utilizing Design of Experiments (DOE) techniques. Writes, edits, and updates batch records, raw material specifications, SOPs, and technical reports. Ensures efficient operations in assigned project areas in accordance with Pharmavite safety requirements, SOPs, and GMPs. Ensures functional operation and preventative maintenance of equipment to reduce/eliminate accidental injury.
- Provide or assist in the training and development of Pharmavite personnel when required.
- Network with outside groups like vendors, consultants, and educators to identify innovative solutions and future opportunities.
- Provides external support to Co-Manufacturers.
- Travel: up to 20%
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education
- Requires a four-year college or university degree or its equivalent in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Food Science, Chemical Engineering or other relevant science degree.
Certification
- None required.
Experience
- Requires a minimum of two years of industry formulation development experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Competent knowledge and practical experience with supplement and/or pharmaceutical and/or functional foods product development, processing equipment and techniques, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong, solid dosage, hands-on formulation, and scale-up experience.
- Proven scientific and technical ability to design and execute experimental and/or protocol studies as well as statistically analyze data, author and review protocols and reports, and present the data to appropriate parties.
- Excellent analytical, technical writing, communication, and data management.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- A firm foundation in chemistry and/or food science is preferred.
- Basic computer literacy, including system log-in, navigation, keyboard, and Internet/web-based application use. Basic Word, Excel, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) experience preferred.
- Knowledge of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) or Lean preferred.
- Project Management skills related to writing project scopes, charters, and leading small cross-functional teams to deliver results
- Experience in the transfer of technical process information to manufacturing sites is a plus.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Environment
- Exposure to disagreeable elements is negligible.
- Frequent work in the pilot plant and production facilities.
Safety
- The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely in accordance with standard operating procedures and good manufacturing practices without endangering their own or others' health or safety.
Supervisory Responsibility

National Target Base Pay Range: $78,000.00 - $128,000.00.
The salary range for this position is based on national standards. For candidates in California and the New York metro, the Target Base Pay Range is $86,000.00 - $142,000.00, to reflect the cost of living and market conditions in those areas.
Actual compensation will take into account a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to geographic location, education, experience, qualifications, and job-related skills. It is not typical for an individual to be hired above the midpoint of the range for their role, and compensation decisions depend on the facts and circumstances of each case. Base pay is only one component of our total rewards offerings, and we will take the full offering into consideration when presenting an offer of employment.
