We are accepting applications for a full-time one-year term Heavy Equipment Operator – Biosolids/Landfill to join our Engineering Services team starting in July 2026 and ending July 2027.

The Heavy Equipment Operator- Biosolids/Landfill provides additional support and relief coverage at both the CVWMC and Biosolids Compost Facility. Key responsibilities include operating, maintaining, repairing and performing upkeep of the waste management site (landfill) and biosolids compost facility equipment and infrastructure; construction of the working landfill; and troubleshooting and resolving problems. The Equipment Operator will safely operate various heavy equipment including landfill packer, excavator, front loader, bulldozer, roll-off truck, or other heavy equipment and/or steer equipment to load and move waste material. Situated at the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre (CVWMC) and Biosolids Compost Facility in Cumberland, and reporting to the Supervisor, CVWMC Operations, the primary responsibilities of this role include:

Operate heavy equipment including compactors, bulldozers, loaders, excavators, trucks, and other machinery in a safe and efficient manner.

Place, compact, move, cover, and manage waste materials in accordance with operational plans, environmental regulations, and site procedures.

Maintain active disposal areas, haul roads, stockpiles, and working surfaces to ensure safe and efficient operations for customers, contractors, and staff.

Receive, inspect, and screen incoming waste, yard waste, compost feedstocks, and other materials for prohibited or controlled substances.

Operate and monitor compost processing equipment, including conveyors, mixers, screening plants, pumps, and blowers, to support effective compost production.

Conduct operational monitoring, testing, and process adjustments to maintain compost quality and ensure compliance with regulatory and permit requirements.

Load, move, stockpile, and distribute compost, soil amendments, and other materials using mobile equipment.

Inspect, clean, service, and perform routine preventive maintenance on heavy equipment and operational machinery, including completing pre-start inspections and equipment condition reports.

Troubleshoot equipment and process issues, implement corrective actions within established guidelines, and assist contractors and trades personnel with repairs as required.

Maintain accurate operational records, including equipment inspections, maintenance activities, inventory, testing results, and production data.

Provide guidance to customers, contractors, and haulers; direct traffic and materials to designated areas; and enforce applicable site rules, bylaws, and safety procedures.

Respond professionally to public inquiries and complaints while supporting overall site operations and performing other related duties as assigned.

Our ideal candidate is

Fully qualified in the safe and efficient operation of all required machinery and equipment including but not limited to landfill compactors, bulldozers, excavators, tandem axle gravel and roll off trucks, to provide effective relief coverage for other staff;

Safety conscious with a strong knowledge of job hazards and safe work practices and the ability to work independently;

Experienced in the practices and procedures related to landfill/waste management and compost facility operations with over two up to and including three years of directly related experience;

Certified as a BC Qualified Landfill Operator, along with high school graduation, a valid BC Driver’s License (class 3 with air brake endorsement) and Occupational First Aid (Level 1);

Able to communicate effectively with the general public, contractors and coworkers and exercise good judgement and courtesy at all times;

Skilled in the use and repair of a variety of tools and equipment;

Flexible when it comes to hours of work to effectively support a seven day per week operation including working weekends;

Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods of time;

Trades certification as a heavy equipment operator and/or certification in road building or earth moving techniques is preferred.

* The work schedule for this position will be Monday to Friday, working 8-hour shifts; however, may be subject to change based on operational needs.*

This is a CUPE Local 556 position with a wage rate of $38.66 per hour plus 10 per cent in lieu of benefits.
