About the Role
As a Data Scientist, you’ll work closely with Product, Business, Data, and Engineering teams to help Borrowell make better decisions and build better experiences for our members. Your work may range from analyzing member behavior and evaluating experiments to developing recommendation systems and predictive models that improve marketplace performance.
This is a hands-on role with significant ownership. You’ll work on problems from initial scoping through implementation, measurement, and iteration, partnering directly with stakeholders to understand the business problem before determining the right solution.
During your first year, you can expect to:
- Deliver measurable business impact – Own 1-2 end-to-end data science projects, from problem framing and analysis through implementation, measurement, and iteration.
- Use data to solve business problems – Apply analytics, experimentation and machine learning where appropriate, while recognizing when a simpler solution is the better choice.
- Contribute to Borrowell’s personalization and recommendation systems – Help improve how products and experiences are matched to members across the marketplace and member lifecycle.
- Partner closely with stakeholders – Work with Product, Business, Data, and Engineering teams to turn business questions into actionable insights and recommendations.
- Help scale the team’s capabilities – Contribute reusable datasets, features, documentation, monitoring, and processes that make it easier to build and maintain data products over time.
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience applying data science, analytics and machine learning to solve real business problems.
- Able to break down ambiguous business questions, identify the right data to use and recommend a practical path forward.
- Experience building and evaluating predictive models, including feature engineering, model validation, and handling challenges such as class imbalance, leakage, and data quality issues.
- Experience with experimentation and A/B testing.
- Strong Python skills and SQL skills for Data Science work.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills – able to clearly explain insights, recommendations, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences..
- Comfortable owning work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Nice to Haves
- Experience working with cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery or Redshift.
- Experience with Looker or other BI tools for analysis and stakeholder reporting.
- Experience in consumer technology, fintech, marketplaces or growth-oriented product environments.

We are remote-first across Canada with an office in Toronto. This role will require you to attend in-person meetings and team-building events. While this role is remote, we are currently only able to hire candidates physically located in Ontario, BC, or Alberta.

The budgeted annual salary range for this role is $80,000 – $130,000 CAD. Starting pay is determined by the candidate's relevant experience and skills. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for Borrowell’s full benefits package.
