Brand Ambassador
Backun Musical Services Ltd.
Brand Ambassador
Backun Musical Services | United States (Field-Based) Full-Time, Travel, Remote/Field
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is not your typical sales job. The Backun Brand Ambassador is our front line in the professional woodwind world. You are the person who shows up with a case full of instruments and accessories, walks into a symphony hall to meet an orchestral player, and presents a masterclass to a room of keen students before catching a red-eye to do it again the next morning.
You are Backun in the field, representing everything we stand for: extraordinary craftsmanship, deep musical integrity, and a genuine love for the clarinet. If that does not describe you, this is probably not your role. If it does, read on.
An artist wants to try our products? You are booking a flight with a full kit of clarinets, barrels, bells, mouthpieces in-hand before finishing the call. That is the energy we are looking for.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Travel across the United States to attend and represent Backun and Laskey at regional and national woodwind events, including ICA events, university woodwind days, orchestral and summer institutes, and everything in between.
- Build genuine, lasting relationships with professional orchestral players, soloists, chamber musicians, and leading educators across all levels of the community.
- Present product sessions - and potentially masterclasses - across the full Backun product line, including clarinets, barrels, bells, and mouthpieces, that are engaging, credible, and worth everyone's time, even when you are running on three hours of sleep and an airport coffee.
- Engage school-aged students and advancing amateurs with the same enthusiasm and care you bring to a world-class soloist. Every player matters, and the right instrument or accessory can be a revelation at any level.
- Maintain an impeccable road inventory across the complete Backun and Laskey product lines, always in performance-ready condition and ready to put in any player's hands.
- Communicate regularly with the Backun team on artist engagement, market intelligence, event outcomes, and opportunities, clearly, promptly, and with useful detail.
- Identify and pursue new opportunities to introduce the Backun and Laskey brands to artists and communities that have not yet experienced what we build.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Woodwind Background
You have a strong understanding of the woodwind community, whether as a performer or through the industry, with experience across standard soprano instruments and the full harmony family. You know the literature, the scene, and the players. Experience working with brass players is an asset, but not required.
Community Knowledge
You know the clarinet world at a high level: orchestral careers, collegiate programs, festival culture, and who plays what and why. You know who is thinking about changing instruments and setups before they do.
Communication
You are a natural connector, confident one-on-one with a principal player and equally at ease in front of a masterclass audience or a room full of school-aged students. Your written communication is just as strong and you’re comfortable engaging with artists wherever they are, whether it’s in-person, phone, email, or through social media.
Road Readiness
Domestic travel is not a drawback for you. It is the job. You are organized, self-sufficient, and thrive on the road. When international travel calls, your passport is already in-hand.
Product Passion
You know Backun instruments and accessories deeply, or you will fast, and you genuinely believe in what we make. You understand how the full product ecosystem works together, and that enthusiasm comes through in every conversation, whether you are fitting a student with their first quality barrel or helping a principal player find their ideal mouthpiece setup.
Experience
A degree in music performance or music education is preferred. Prior experience in artist relations, instrument sales, education outreach, or brand representation is an asset, but not required. We will teach you if you are willing to master the craft. You should have working knowledge of, and be comfortable with, Microsoft Office Suite and social media.
THE REALITY OF THIS ROLE
This is a demanding position for someone who genuinely thrives in it. You will be on the road, presenting your best self in rooms full of people who know what great clarinet playing sounds like. You need to be organized, responsive, and personable enough that people are excited to see you coming.
The role reports directly to Joel Jaffe, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Backun, and works in close collaboration with Eastman Music Company sales representatives and dealers across the country, supporting their efforts to advance the Backun and Laskey brands within their respective
territories.
In return, you will be embedded in the heart of the clarinet community, representing brands that players at the very top of the profession choose to play. There is no better office than a stage, a masterclass space, or an artist dinner in the middle of a week-long clarinet festival. Most importantly, we understand there is time for work and time for family and play. Managing your schedule and a reasonable work/life balance is key to staying engaged and being ready to serve the community. If you have commitments that require you to be home at times, we get that and we support it.
COMPENSATION
Backun instruments are not cheap, and neither are we. Compensation is commensurate with experience and passion for the role and includes a marketing and travel budget that will not have you sleeping in hostels or handing out half-used tubes of cork grease.
