Overview

The Residence Area Coordinator is responsible for fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging residence community that supports student success and well-being. Reporting to the Director of Residence Services, the RAC provides leadership in student development, staff supervision, community standards, programming, crisis response, and residence administration. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with students, staff, faculty, and community partners to create a positive residence experience that promotes academic achievement, personal growth, and community engagement.

Responsibilities

Student Development & Community Support

  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive residence environment for students.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to students regarding academic, personal, and community concerns.
  • Respond to and mediate student conflicts, behavioural concerns, and crisis situations.
  • Promote student leadership opportunities and community engagement initiatives.
  • Support student wellness and connect students with appropriate campus and community resources.

Residence Life Programming & Community Development

  • Lead the planning and implementation of residence-wide orientation and educational programming.
  • Coordinate social, academic, wellness, and community-building initiatives within residence.
  • Collaborate with campus departments and community organizations on joint programming opportunities.
  • Support and oversee residence committees, events, and leadership initiatives.

Staff Supervision & Leadership

  • Recruit, train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate Residence Life Staff, including Resident Assistants and House Presidents.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and team development opportunities.
  • Coordinate staff schedules, assignments, and programming responsibilities.
  • Support staff development and promote a collaborative team environment.

Residence Operations & Administration

  • Interpret and administer Residence policies, procedures, and community standards.
  • Maintain accurate records, incident reports, and student documentation.
  • Assist with residence operations including move-in, orientation, emergency response, and facilities concerns.
  • Liaise with campus departments including Security Services, Student Health and Wellness, Physical Plant, and Human Rights and Equity.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and emergency response duties.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Student Affairs, Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of progressive leadership experience in residence life, student affairs, community living, or a related environment.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, mentoring, and developing student staff teams.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, mediation, conflict resolution, and crisis management skills.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, mental health supports, and community engagement practices within a post-secondary environment.
  • Experience working within inclusive environments and anti-oppression frameworks is considered an asset.
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and problem-solving abilities with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Experience planning and facilitating educational and social programming.
  • Strong judgment, professionalism, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and student information/documentation systems.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification is an asset. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), ASIST, and
  • SafeTalk training are considered assets.
