- Secondary Student Achievement Coach (Literacy & Numeracy) - Supporting Indigenous Education Priorities West Region
Role and Responsibilities
This role is supported through Board Action Plan (BAP) funding for Indigenous Education and is designed to strengthen instructional capacity and improve academic outcomes for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students across designated secondary schools.
Reporting to a Central Principal, the successful candidate will work in close collaboration with school administrators, educators, and Indigenous Education staff to provide targeted, school-based supports. Through this targeted deployment, the position supports all learners with a clear and sustained focus on improving achievement, engagement, and well-being for Indigenous students.
Embedded within school communities, the coach will provide responsive, evidence-informed instructional support in literacy and numeracy, while occasionally, working alongside Indigenous Education Staff to strengthen teaching and learning. This approach reinforces strong collaboration with existing school-based Indigenous education staff, ensuring continuity of relationships and alignment with Board commitments to community and partner organizations.
- Supporting Indigenous student achievement in literacy and mathematics through culturally responsive, identity-affirming instructional practices
- Working collaboratively with secondary educators through co-planning, co-teaching, and co-reflection to strengthen classroom instruction
- Providing targeted, school-based support aligned with demonstrated student need and Board Action Plan priorities
- Alongside Indigenous Language educators and Grad Coaches support integrating Anishnaabemowin language, culture, and ways of knowing into secondary programming
- Supporting student engagement, pathways, and well-being through responsive instructional strategies
- Supporting the use of data and evidence-informed practices to guide instruction and monitor progress
- Contributing to professional learning and educator capacity building across assigned schools
Required Teaching Qualifications
- Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers
- Minimum five (5) years of successful secondary teaching experience
- Additional Qualification in Mathematics and/or Literacy considered an asset
- FNMI additional qualifications(s) considered an asset
Position Criteria
The Secondary Student Achievement Coach (Literacy & Numeracy) - Supporting Indigenous Education priorities will possess:
- Experience in literacy and/or mathematics instruction at the secondary level
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills grounded in trust and respect
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with educators, administrators, and community partners
- Demonstrated experience supporting Indigenous students and communities
- Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, languages, and ways of knowing
- Commitment to equity, reconciliation, and culturally responsive practice
- Effective facilitation, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to analyze and respond to student data to support improved outcomes
- Proven ability to contribute to school and system improvement initiatives
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the district
